Agreement reached in F1

Author: Rose Young
Date: 25/06/2009

FIA president Max Mosley claims an agreement has been reached to prevent eight teams from forming a rival series to Formula One next season.

Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Brawn GP, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso had all threatened to walk away from the current set up and form a breakaway series after opposing the FIA's proposal to introduce a £40million budget cap on teams.

However, Mosley now claims a resolution has been agreed, but that he has agreed not to stand for re-election as head of the FIA in a bid to 'keep the peace'.

"There will be no split. We have agreed to a reduction of costs," claimed Mosley.

"There will be one F1 championship (but) but the objective is to get back to the spending levels of the early '90s within two years."

The 22-year-old had slipped down the pecking order at Eastlands following the arrival of Shay Given in the January transfer window and has decided to move to St Andrew's to gain regular first-team football.

Meanwhile, the Blues have had a bid in the region of £5million for central defender Roger Johnson accepted by Cardiff City.

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has admitted that he would be interested in talking to former England striker Michael Owen about a move to the Britannia Stadium.

The 29-year-old has made it known that he will quit Newcastle United following their relegation from the Premier League and will be a free agent in a matter of days.

West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola has sealed a deal to bring Internazionale midfielder Luis Jimenez to Upton Park on a season-long loan.

The Hammers also have the option of signing Jimenez on a permanent basis next summer.

In rugby union, British and Irish Lions lock Nathan Hines will miss Saturday's second Test against South Africa in Pretoria after being handed a one-week ban for foul play in the 13-13 draw with the Emerging Springboks.

The Scotland forward had been cited for a dangerous tackle on Wilhelm Steenkamp in the 49th minute of Tuesday's hard-fought encounter.

Perpignan lock Hines will be available for the Lions' last game of their ten-match tour, the final Test against the Springboks on July 4.

Ahead of Saturday's second encounter, South Africa have been made favourites with the sportsbooks to have the three-game series wrapped up by the time Hines is available again.
