Big two show failings

It has been a breath of fresh air for the neutral fans among us to see Chelsea and Manchester United slipping up in the Premier League recently.

The campaign had threatened to be dominated by the big two yet again, but with both finding three points hard to come by in the last few weeks, they may not have it all their own way as we head into 2010.

United's frailties have been exposed, albeit through a debilitating injury list, and they are feeling the pinch more than most.

Last weekend, the makeshift side that lost 3-0 at Fulham included Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher and youngster Richie de Laet at the heart of their defence.

It's hardly recognisable is it?

Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, John O'Shea and Jonny Evans are all in the treatment room in what must be a massive concern for manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fulham made the most of their opportunity and swiftly put the Reds to the sword, much to Chelsea's delight.

But Carlo Ancelotti's men aren't having it all their own way after looking irresistible just a few weeks ago.

Five wins from five through October and November without conceding a goal let the football world know that Chelsea meant business.

However, just one win from their last four league outings has outraged Ancelotti, who strives for perfection in his first year in charge of the Stamford Bridge club.

With perennial top-four outfit Liverpool way off the pace in eighth place, there may be a change of the old guard amongst the higher echelons of the Premier League.

Arsenal may be the side that prosper. Arsene Wenger's men are ticking along nicely, picking up wins as others fail around them.

With a young squad at his disposal, the Frenchman knows there is no pressure on him to claim the serious honours on offer this term, and this could work in his favour.

They are just six points behind Chelsea and they have a game in hand over their London rivals.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are making a strong bid to break into the top-four, but with the season so young, it will be interesting to see how they perform in the new year.

With Manchester City now under new boss Roberto Mancini, they may have a say in the title chase, but don't expect them to finish top of the pile as they lag leaders Chelsea by 12 points.

Chelsea, who remain sportsbook favourites to win the title, and Manchester United must turn their fortunes around if it is to be the regular two-way battle, and if they don't, the Premier League could have a different look to it in May.
