Cabrera Masters Augusta

Author: Craig Williams
Date: 13/04/2009

Argentina's Angel Cabrera won The Masters at Augusta following a dramatic play-off victory over Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell.

A thrilling final day eventually ended on the second extra hole, with Cabrera's par at the tenth enough to see off Perry, after Campbell had dropped out at the first play-off hole.

The scoring in bright sunshine was low all day, with both tournament betting favourite Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson mounting strong challenges for the Green Jacket before falling just short.

Perry looked like he was set to become the oldest-ever Major winner following a superb birdie at 16, but he dropped shots at both of the last two holes to finished tied with Cabrera and Campbell on 12-under par.

Cabrera's hopes then looked to have ended when he drove into the trees at the 18th, the first play-off hole, but he somehow conjured up a par, while Campbell recorded a bogey to see his chances disappear.

Perry then pulled his approach to the par four tenth and could do no better than a bogey, leaving Cabrera with two putts from around 20 feet to secure his second Major title, the South American having won the 2007 US Open.

Aston Villa and Everton both failed to significantly enhance their Champions League qualification credentials after drawing 3-3 in a thrilling encounter at Villa Park.

The point apiece has left Villa eight and the Toffees nine points respectively behind Arsenal in the race for the fourth and final qualification place.

Villa were two goals down in the first half through Marouane Fellaini and Tim Cahill and home fans feared the worst as their side were seemingly heading for their fifth successive defeat.

But big John Carew put them back on course only for the hugely talented South African Steven Pienaar to give Everton a 3-1 lead.

James Milner scored direct from a free-kick and then Gareth Barry slammed home the face-saving penalty to rob Everton of their first away win since Boxing Day.

Elsewhere in the Premier League on Sunday, two goals from Clint Dempsey helped Fulham keep their hopes of qualifying for next season's UEFA Europa League alive.

The Cottagers were 3-1 winners over a disappointing Manchester City side at Eastlands.

Stephen Ireland had fired the home side into a first-half lead, but a brace from USA international Dempsey and a goal from City old-boy Dickson Etuhu moved Roy Hodgson's side back up to eighth place in the table.

In rugby union, Holders Munster kept their hopes of a second straight Heineken Cup success alive following a formidable 43-9 quarter-final victory over Ospreys.

Tries from Paul Warwick, Paul O'Connell and Keith Earls (2) plus 17 points from the boot of Ronan O'Gara secured a comfortable victory and set up a semi-final at Croke Park against Leinster.

Leinster themselves survived a late onslaught to edge out Harlequins 6-5 in a low-scoring quarter-final at the Twickenham Stoop.

Two first-half penalties from Felipe Contepomi cancelled out a kick from Mike Brown to set up a mouth-watering last-four showdown next month.

In the European Challenge Cup, Saracens cruised into a semi-final encounter with Northampton following a comfortable 32-13 win over Newcastle Falcons.
