Draw doesn't help Baggies

West Bromwich Albion remain six points adrift of Premier League safety and betting favourites for the drop after drawing 0-0 with West Ham United at Upton Park.

Tony Mowbray's rock-bottom side carved out the most clear-cut goalscoring chances against the injury-hit Hammers, but the closest they came to breaking the deadlock was a Shelton Martis header in the second half which rattled the crossbar.

Afterwards, Mowbray admitted the Baggies were down but not out and has backed his side to go on a late season charge and avoid being relegated back into the Championship at the first time of asking.

Meanwhile, the Hammers failed to boost their chances of securing UEFA Cup qualification for next season after missing out on the three points which would have further consolidated their seventh place in the table.

In tennis, Andy Murray made an impressive return to action after coasting through to the second round of the Indian Wells Masters 1000.

The British number one was making his first appearance since retiring from a tournament earlier in the month through illness and overcame Paul-Henri 6-3 6-2 Mathieu with little drama.

Murray remains on course for a semi-final showdown with world number two Roger Federer in California.

England's women booked their place in the final of the cricket World Cup after thrashing West Indies by 146 runs in Sydney.

Sarah Taylor (78) and Caroline Atkins (50)'s opening stand of 134 set up the latest win for the tournament favourites, who have now secured their place in the showpiece with two Super Eight qualifying games still to be played.

New Zealand are expected to be their Final opposition after they were winners by five wickets against India.

Joe Calzaghe is still undefeated after the recently retired former boxing world champion won his High Court battle over money with his ex-manager and promoter Frank Warren.

Calzaghe, who retired last month from the ring unbeaten, claimed he was owed £2million in unpaid fees, while Warren was seeking £1million after alleging the boxer broke a verbal contract.

However, Mr Justice Wyn Williams ruled in favour of Calzaghe and ordered Warren should pay him £2million.

In swimming, Jo Jackson beat Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington to win the 400 metres freestyle at the British Swimming Championships in a new world record time.

Jackson set a new record of 4:00.66, while Adlington also broke Federica Pellegrini's previous world best by finishing in 4:00.89 in a thrilling race in Sheffield.
