Author: John Harris
Date: 10/06/2009

The Netherlands' hopes of progress at the ICC World Twenty20 were ended by Pakistan, who won by a massive 82-run margin at Lord's.

The Dutch sprung a major shock in the opening game of the tournament by beating hosts England, but were unable to back that up against Pakistan.

Pakistan, needing a win themselves to reach the Super Eights, racked up 175-5 from their 20 overs, with Kamran Akmal the top-scorer with 41 from 30 balls at the top of the order.

In reply the Dutch were never in the hunt and subsided to 93 all out, leg-spinner Shahid Afridi doing most of the damage with superb figures of 4-11 from his four overs.

In the day's other game, South Africa and New Zealand played out a surprisingly exciting contest given that both sides had already qualified for the next stage.

The Proteas mustered a mere 128-7 from their 20 overs, but were able to clinch a one-run victory when Jacob Oram was unable to strike the last ball of the Black Caps' innings for a boundary.

In county cricket, the inclement weather around the country held sway in most parts, with all seven matches which ended on Tuesday being drawn.

The most exciting climax came at Headingley, where Sussex ended on 257-8 in their second innings, falling just over 20 runs short of a victory.

In football, European champions Spain warmed up nicely for their upcoming Confederations Cup campaign with a 6-0 friendly win in Azerbaijan.

In-demand striker David Villa led the way with a hat-trick in Baku, while Albert Riera, Fernando Torres and Dani Guiza also got their names on the scoresheet.

In the NBA finals the Orlando Magic beat the LA Lakers 108-104 to reduce the deficit in the seven-game series to 2-1.
