England maintained their 100 per cent start to World Cup 2010 qualification by cruising to an ultimately flattering 4-0 victory over Kazakhstan.

First-half goals from Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey helped settled the nerves after a lack-lustre start to the game which could have seen Kazakhstan take the lead.

But two more goals after the interval - first from Wayne Rooney and then a Frank Lampard penalty - ensured England made it six wins from as many qualifying games and moved Fabio Capello's side closer to qualification for next summer's finals.

Elsewhere, Holland booked their place in next summer's tournament by beating Iceland 2-1.

In England's group, Belarus cruised to a 5-1 win over Andorra while Croatia and Ukraine shared four goals.

In rugby union, the British & Irish Lions maintained their 100 per cent start to the tour to South Africa, but were pushed all the way by a determined Cheetahs side before securing a 26-24 win in Bloemfontein.

Meanwhile at Old Trafford, two tries by Delon Armitage helped England to a comfortable 37-15 victory over Argentina.

In forumla one, Sebastian Vettel snatched pole position for the Turkish Grand Prix from under the nose of Jenson Button in a dramatic final qualifying session at Istanbul Park.

Button himself had nudged Vettel's Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber off top spot with just seconds to go after the runaway world championship leader set a best time of 1:28.421.

Button's Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello then rubbed salt into the wounds by also bettering Webber's time.

However, Vettel denied Brawn GP another one-two at the front of the grid after the German's stunning last lap of 1.28.316 enabled him to edge out Button and left the Red Bull garage celebrating.

In the women's final at tennis' French Open, Svetlana Kuznetsova beat fellow Russian and world number one Dinara Safina at Roland Garros.

Kuznetsova won 6-4 6-2 to clinch her second major title, following victory at the 2004 US Open.

2000 Guineas winner Sea The Stars completed a Classic double with success at the Derby at Epsom while in cricket's World Twenty20 Chris Gayle smashed 88 as West Indies beat Australia.

Pragyan Ojha took four wickets as India beat Bangladesh by 25 runs and New Zealand beat Scotland by seven wickets in a rain-affected game that was reduced to seven overs.

In Super League, Catalans Dragons winger Cyril Stacul scored a last-gasp try as the French side surprisingly beat Leeds Rhinos 32-30.

Castleford's recent poor run continued as they were beaten 34-18 at The Jungle by revitalised Warrington Wolves while Harlequins beta rock-bottom Celtic Crusaders 26-6.
