Date: 18/05/2009

Football Association chairman Lord Triesman believes the nation has the infrastructure and passion required to host a World Cup after England officially launched its bid to host the 2018 or 2022 tournament.

Speaking at a glittering launch party at Wembley on Monday attended by an array of famous footballing faces, Triesman spoke of the 'festival of football' that a World Cup in England would provide.

Football betting experts believe that England's bid is a strong one.

Meanwhile, David Bentley could leave Tottenham this summer, according to boss Harry Redknapp.

The 24-year-old has endured a difficult season in north London following his 15million switch from Blackburn Rovers ten months ago and has not started a Premier League game since January.

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has played down his on-field spat with team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa during Sunday's 2-0 win at West Brom.

Rafa Benitez's side were already two goals ahead as the match entered its closing stages when the two players became involved in a heated exchange after Carragher had been forced to block Marc-Antoine Fortune's close-range shot.

West Brom striker Roman Bednar has apologised after he was pictured in the News of the World allegedly buying drugs following the victory against Wigan Athletic earlier this month.

Albion have suspended the 26-year-old Czech Republic international while an internal investigation takes place and Bednar admits the whole affair has been very embarrassing.

Carlos Villanueva, who has been on loan at Blackburn Rovers this season, has agreed to join Al Shabab in the United Arab Emirates.

The 23-year-old Chile international temporarily moved to Rovers last summer from parent club Audax Italiano but has not been a first-team regular at Ewood Park.

Villanueva was handed his first Premier League start of the year by Sam Allardyce in Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce has decided not to sign Egypt international Amr Zaki on a permanent basis.

The 26-year-old made a blistering start to his loan stay at the JJB Stadium, finding the net ten times in his first 16 appearances for the Latics but has failed to score since the turn of the year.

He has also annoyed Bruce on several occasions by returning to the club late from international duty.

West Indies lost their last seven wickets for 35 runs as England regained the Wisden Trophy with embarrassing ease.

Andrew Strauss' side won the second Test at Chester-le-Street by an innings and 83 runs soon after lunch on the final day of the second Test to secure a 2-0 series win.

Tim Bresnan took three wickets on the fifth day, including the last to fall - that of Fidel Edwards.

The Yorkshireman also dismissed Brendan Nash and Denesh Ramdin, while James Anderson increased his wicket haul to nine in the match.

England have now been made strong favourites in the cricket betting stakes to win the forthcoming one-day series between the two teams.

British and Irish Lions coach Ian McGeechan has decided not to replace injured Wales centre Tom Shanklin for the forthcoming tour of South Africa.

Shanklin dislocated a shoulder two weeks ago but McGeechan thinks his squad is strong enough to cover for the Cardiff Blues star's absence.

Bath have launched an investigation over allegations that some of their players were involved in an incident at a London nightclub.
