Federer hits back to beat Haas

Author: Sir David Smith

Roger Federer, the new sports betting favourite, was given a major scare by Tommy Haas in the last 16 of the French Open before eventually winning in five sets.

The Swiss player had to come back from two sets down to beat the unseeded Haas and reach the last eight of the tournament.

Rafael Nadal's shock defeat on Sunday to Robin Soderling had opened the way for Federer to clinch his first Roland Garros title and complete tennis' Grand Slam.

However, the German took the first two sets and forced Federer to save a vital break point at 3-4 in the third set.

From that point on though, the world number two moved up through the gears to eventually seal a 6-7, 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 triumph.

Federer faces Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals after the Frenchman beat Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

Fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 and will now play 16th seed Tommy Robredo in the last eight after the Spaniard beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2.

Meanwhile, the fifth seed and one of the favourites to win the women's French Open title, Jelena Jankovic, slumped to a shock fourth round defeat to Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea.

The 19-year-old, ranked 41 in the world, won 3-6, 6-0, 9-7 against the former world number one.

Cirstea will play Samantha Stosur in the last eight after the Australian thrashed Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-2.

Meanwhile, second seed Serena Williams had little trouble moving into the last eight after thrashing Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-2.

The Canadian won just one point in the first three games and never looked like causing the American any problems.

Williams faces Svetlana Kuznetsova next after the seventh seed beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.

In the latest round of cricket's Twenty20 Cup matches Northamptonshire made it four wins out of four as they beat Warwickshire by 24 runs in the Midlands/Wales/West division.

Somerset are second in the group after cruising to a ten-wicket victory over Glamorgan at Taunton thanks to Marcus Trescothick (69 not out) and Craig Kieswetter, who was unbeaten on 57.

Worcestershire edged to a 13-run victory against Gloucestershire after openers Vikram Solanki and Steve Davies both made half-centuries.

In the South Division, Middlesex are still winless after crashing to a seven-wicket defeat to Sussex at Hove.

Alastair Cook hit 77 as Essex made 205-4 on the way to a 36-run victory over Kent at Chelmsford.
