Ferrari enjoyed a perfect start to the new Formula One season as Fernando Alonso won the Bahrain Grand Prix and team-mate Felipe Massa finished second.

Alonso took advantage of some late problems for Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel to ease to victory in his first outing for Ferrari, following his off-season switch from Renault.

Vettel looked well set to clinch the win himself, leading out superbly from pole position and seeming to have the race under control, before an exhaust problem led to Alonso taking the lead on lap 34 out of 49.

Massa quickly swept by the ailing Vettel, who would eventually finish in fourth place, with Alonso and Massa joined on the podium by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton.

The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg and the returning Michael Schumacher enjoyed a solid afternoon as they finished fifth and sixth respectively.

Reigning world champion Jenson Button could only manage seventh in the second McLaren, while Vettel's Red Bulls colleague Mark Webber finished eighth.

Manny Pacquiao made a powerful defence of his WBO welterweight title against Joshua Clottey, securing a unanimous points decision at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Pacquiao, seen by most pundits as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, dominated throughout against Ghana's Joshua Clottey, who at least had the satisfaction of maintaining his record of having never been stopped.

Pacquiao was a 120-108 victor on one card, with the other two judges scoring the bout 119-109 in the Philippines fighter's favour.

Everton have confirmed that USA international forward Landon Donovan has left the club at the end of his loan spell and is heading home to rejoin LA Galaxy.

The 28-year-old netted twice in 13 appearances for the Toffees, with manager David Moyes having hoped to be able to extend Donovan's time at Goodison Park.

However, a club statement read: "Landon Donovan has returned to LA Galaxy following his ten-week loan.

"Despite attempts to extend Donovan's loan period at Everton, LA Galaxy have now recalled him to their squad ahead of the start of the MLS season on March 27."

Ex-Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes that his former club are obsessed with trying to prise England ace Wayne Rooney away from Manchester United.

Real made a world record move for United's Cristiano Ronaldo last summer and Calderon thinks that another major deal is in the pipeline at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "It seems that it's an obsession for the president (Florentino Perez) to go for Rooney."
