Fresh storm surrounds Tevez

Carlos Tevez is at the centre of a fresh dispute between Manchester United and his advisors.

Tevez scored a vital equaliser in Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic which moved United to the brink of another Premier League title.

Afterwards Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that the club had tabled an offer for the Argentina striker who is coming towards the end of a two-year loan contract.

However, Tevez's advisor, Kia Joorabchian, claims that no offer has been made for the 25-year-old striker, who has scored 33 goals in 96 appearances for the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Ferguson has pledged to go for the jugular when United take on Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime needing only one point to secure the Premier League crown for the third straight season.

The football betting odds concerning United's title chances were dramatically slashed following Michael Carrick's late winner against Wigan on Wednesday night.

Elsewhere, Rafael Benitez claims Liverpool would have pushed United even further in the title race had Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres not suffered with injury.

Benitez has praised his squad for keeping the title race alive heading into the penultimate weekend of the season, but the Spaniard is still ruing the succession injuries suffered by the key duo through the campaign.

Xabi Alonso is confident that he will still be a Liverpool player at the start of next season.

Alonso was strongly linked with a move to Juventus and then Arsenal last summer with Benitez keen to raise funds to sign Aston Villa's Gareth Barry.

Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz has reiterated his desire to leave Blackburn Rovers at the end of the season.

Santa Cruz was the subject of several unsuccessful bids from Manchester City in January but he remains hopeful of finally securing a move away from Ewood Park during the summer.

London Irish centre Seilala Mapusua has been named as the Professional Rugby Players' Association player of the year.

The 29-year-old Samoan edged out Newcastle Falcons fly-half Tom May and Sale Sharks back-row forward Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe for the top award, with the young player prize going to Northampton Saints' Ben Foden.

Meanwhile, Munster flanker Alan Quinlan has been ruled out of the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa after being banned for 12 weeks for eye-gouging.

West Indies Cricket Board president Julian Hunte has called captain Chris Gayle's comments that he could stand down in the near future as 'unfortunate'.

Gayle hinted ahead of the second Test match with England that he was tired of the role and could even quit the longer form of the game altogether.
