Unheralded home golfer Lucas Glover held his nerve to seal a two-shot victory at the US Open at Bethpage Black.
It was only the 29-year-old's second tournament victory on tour, with his previous success coming at the 2005 Funai Classic.
Glover shot a three-over par final round of 73, but that was enough for glory, as he finished on four-under par, two shots better off than compatriots Ricky Barnes, David Duval and Phil Mickelson.
England's Ross Fisher ended fifth, with Dane Soren Hansen in a tie for sixth with Hunter Mahan and last year's champion, Tiger Woods.
Glover's exploits helped him to climb into the top twenty in the world rankings, having started the tournament down in 71st place.
Wimbledon got underway with men's sportsbook favourite Roger Federer quickly easing into the second round.
The Swiss maestro was far too strong for Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei, winning 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.
