Former world number one Justine Henin has confirmed her return to competitive action just 16 months after retiring.

Henin, 27, retired in May 2008 after revealing she had lost her desire to play top-level tennis. However, she has now announced her intention to return for the start of the 2010 season.

The Belgian won 41 singles titles, including seven Grand Slams, during the first part of her career despite often struggling with injury.

The diminutive Henin won the French Open four times, US Open twice, one Australian Open and an Olympic gold medal in 2004.

Her return to action comes just weeks after compatriot Kim Clijsters' own comeback.

Clijsters won the US Open earlier this month after returning from a two-and-a-half year retirement during which time she gave birth to a daughter.
