India upset the cricket odds to seal their first series win in New Zealand since 1968 as the third and final Test match in Wellington ended in a draw following a rain-affected fifth day.

The home side started the final day on 167-4 in their second innings, requiring more than 600 to try and rescue a drawn series.

However, only inclement weather prevented the Black Caps from suffering a 2-0 series defeat.

The highlight of the final day at the Basin Reserve was a century from Ross Taylor, who made 107 before being clean bowled by Harbhajan Singh, with the off-spinner finishing with 4-59 from 33 overs.

James Franklin also contributed an important 49 before he became one of two wickets taken by Sachin Tendulkar.

However, heavy showers brought an end to play with New Zealand on 281-8, leaving India to celebrate a rare success Down Under.

There were victories for both Ireland and Scotland in the latest round of games in the ICC World Cup qualifying tournament in South Africa.

Ireland beat Canada by six wickets to make it five wins out of five, while Scotland saw off Uganda by 45 runs to keep their hopes alive.

In football Wolves missed a chance to go eight points clear at the top of the Championship table as they were beaten 2-0 at local rivals Birmingham City.

The Blues were reduced to ten men during the first half at St Andrew's when Lee Carsley was red-carded for a high challenge on Chris Iwelumo, but City took the lead right on half-time through Cameron Jerome.

They then wrapped up the victory with just over 20 minutes to play when Garry O'Connor latched on to a defensive error to slide the ball home.

The result moved Birmingham six points clear of both Sheffield United and Reading in the chase for the second automatic promotion spot.

In the Conference National leaders Burton Albion missed an opportunity to all but seal a place in the Football League as they lost 1-0 at home to Torquay United, who moved up to second place in the table.
