1. Rungnado May Day Stadium (150,000 capacity)
The largest sports stadium in the world is the home of North Korean football and athletics. Built in 1989 to resemble a blossoming flower, the stadium and its famous arch design has housed as many as 190,000 spectators for a wrestling event but officially seats a more modest 150,000. It easily dwarfs Pyongyang's other arena - the 70,000 capacity Kim Il-Sung Stadium.
2. Salt Lake Stadium (120,000)
India's largest stadium can be found in Kolkata and is the home of the country's national football and athletics events. Built in 1984, it is the home of three football teams - East Bengal FC, Mohun Bagan AC and Mohammedan SC - and has hosted the South Asian Federation Games.
3. Estadio Azteca (115,000)
Aside from Wembley, the Azteca is perhaps the most famous football stadium in the world. Home to the Mexican national football team and club side America, it is the only venue to host two World Cup Finals (in 1970 and 1986). The Olympic Games, Pan American Games and a rally by Pope John Paul II have all also taken place here.
4. Michigan Stadium (107,000)
The largest stadium in North America is affectionately known as 'The Big House'. Home to the University of Michigan's American Football team, when the Michigan Wolverines play the capacity crowd is larger than the population of host city Ann Arbor.
5. Beaver Stadium (107,500)
Running a close second to the Michigan Stadium is another college American Football stadium which is home to Penn State Nittany Lions. The 1960s stadium is named after James A Beaver, a former governor of Pennsylvania.
6. Jornalista Mario Filho (103,000)
Better known as the Maracana, the home of the Brazil national football team in Rio de Janeiro is the largest stadium in South America. 199,500 people crowded in to watch the World Cup Final in 1950, while tenants Flamengo and Fluminense regularly draw 90,000 crowds.
7. Ohio Stadium (102,000)
Another college American Football stadium, Ohio Stadium plays host to the Buckeyes and the university's athletics team. 'The Horseshoe' is also a renowned concert venue with the likes of U2, Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd all playing sell-out gigs here.
8. Melbourne Cricket Ground (100,000)
Perhaps the most widely used of all the world's largest stadiums, the MCG is home to several cricket, Australian Rules football and soccer teams. The distinctive bowl has staged the Olympic and Commonwealth Games too.
9. National Stadium Bukit Jalil (100,000)
Built to host the 1998 Commonwealth Games, the stadium is now the home of the Malaysian national football team. It is considered to be one of the finest sporting arenas in Asia.
10. Azadi Stadium (100,000)
Voted the most intimidating stadium in the Middle East, the 1970s arena is the centrepiece of a sporting village which now plays host to the national football team and club sides Persepolis and Esteghlal.
