Liverpool will be without both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres for Saturday's Premier League trip to Sunderland.

England midfielder Gerrard and Spain striker Torres both missed their country's midweek World Cup qualifiers after picking up groin problems earlier in the international break.

Gerrard's injury was thought to be more serious that Torres' but, speaking ahead of the trip to the Stadium of Light, Reds boss Rafael Benitez has revealed that neither of his two leading players will be fit enough to take part.

Meanwhile, sportsbook second favourites Manchester United will be without injured striker Wayne Rooney for Saturday's Premier League visit of Bolton Wanderers to Old Trafford.

Rooney missed England's World Cup qualifier against Belarus on Wednesday with a calf strain picked up against Ukraine the previous weekend.

Sunderland have handed Boudewijn Zenden a contract until the end of the season following a successful trial at the Stadium of Light.
