Liverpool's star striker Fernando Torres is close to a return to action, as he makes good progress in his recovery from a niggling groin injury.

The 25-year-old Spain international has not featured since the 1-1 Champions League draw in Lyon in early November, but could yet return against Blackburn Rovers this weekend.

Manager Rafa Benitez said: "The feedback we had about Torres was very positive and he was feeling good. We will see how he is in the next training sessions, but it seems as though things are going well."

Schalke have dismissed renewed rumours suggesting that they are prepared to sell goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old Germany international is regarded as one of the most consistent keepers in the Bundesliga and agent Thomas Kroth claimed that Manchester United are keen on a deal.

However, Schalke head coach Felix Magath told Bild: "I have said that Manuel Neuer is not for sale and there is no more news on this.

"I am definitely not prepared to sell potentially the best shot-stopper in Germany."

Jesper Parnevik has voiced stinging criticism of Tiger Woods following the off-course allegations which have emerged since the world number one crashed his car last week.

Woods, 33, required hospital treatment for facial lacerations after crashing his car near his home in the early hours of Friday morning.

On Wednesday he apologised for his 'transgressions' and promised to 'be a better person' following lurid allegations in the world's media of affairs with three separate women.

Woods has been married to Elin Nordegren since 2004 and the couple were introduced when the former model was employed as Parnevik's au pair.

The Swede told The Golf Channel. "I would be especially sad about it since I'm kind of - I really feel sorry for Elin - since me and my wife were at fault for hooking her up with him.

"We probably thought he was a better guy than he is."

In tennis, former world number one Amelie Mauresmo has retired at the age of 30.

Mauresmo, who won 25 career singles titles including the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006, had not played since her second-round exit to Aleksandra Wozniak in this year's US Open.

"I came here to announce the end of my career. I made this decision after careful consideration," said the Frenchwoman, who topped the WTA rankings in September 2004.

Nottinghamshire batsman Bilal Shafayat has signed a new one-year contract to extend his stay at Trent Bridge.

The 25-year-old right-hander struggled for form last summer, but has been given a chance to turn things around next season.

Shafayat has made 5,551 runs at an average of a touch over 30 in 112 first-class matches, scoring eight centuries.
