Magnificent seven films

Author: Lynda Collins
Date: 10/03/2009

In honour of last month's Oscars we've identified the seven best sporting films of all time.

From baseball to boxing, there's a celluloid moment here for every sports fan and betting pundit.

Field Of Dreams

Iowa farmer Kevin Costner hears voices saying "If you build it, he will come," and sets about creating a baseball field among his corn. The ultimate feel-good film then reunites 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson and the other Chicago White Sox players who were banned from baseball for throwing the 1919 World Series.

Caddyshack

Regarded as one of the best comedies ever, Caddyshack follows the trials and tribulations of members and staff at Bushwood Country Golf Club. Bill Murray and Chevy Chase still dine out on their hilarious portrayals of madcap greenskeeper Carl Spackler and playboy Ty Webb despite the film being almost 30 years old.

Rocky

The film that has spawned a thousand sequels, Sylvester Stallone's original portrayal of Rocky Balboa stands the test of time. The story of a rags-to-riches Italian-American who rose from debt collector to fighting the legendary Apollo Creed won three Oscars - including Best Picture - and made Stallone a household name.

Bull Durham

Another Kevin Costner submission, Bull Durham follows the fortunes of a minor league baseball team and in particular veteran catcher Crash Davis. He is given the job of mentoring wild rookie Nuke LaLoosh and the love triangle which ensues meant the film had universal appeal.

Raging Bull

Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, Raging Bull was always destined to be a heavyweight depiction of the ugly side of the sport of kings. Documenting the life of Jake LaMotta, a violent, jealous and embittered middleweight from the Bronx, it's a tough but poignant tale which is regarded as one of the best films of its generation.

When We Were Kings

Documenting arguably the greatest sports story of all time, When We Were Kings recounts Muhammad Ali and George Foreman's Rumble in the Jungle fight in Zaire. Using documentary footage, news clips and photos, Leon Gast's film perfectly encapsulates the unique mood in the summer of 1974.

Escape to Victory

Starring Bobby Moore, Ossie Ardiles, Pele and a host of Ipswich Town players, Escape to Victory is as popular now as it was on its release in 1981. The ultimate football film follows a group of Allied prisoners of war who secure a draw against the German national side during World War II before escaping from their captors.
