Newcastle United moved out of the bottom three as Alan Shearer won his first game in six attempts as Magpies boss, with betting favourites for the drop Middlesbrough looking doomed after a 3-1 defeat at St James' Park.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate has never won a north-east derby and, despite an early Habib Beye own goal putting his side in front, Newcastle were always the better outfit.

In what was United's biggest home win of the season, Steven Taylor levelled it up with a bullet header.

Then two goals in the final 20 minutes from substitutes Obafemi Martins and Peter Lovenkrands made it safe.

In the Championship play-offs, Greg Halford sent Sheffield United's fans into dreamland with a second-half goal that confirmed the Yorkshire side's place in the Wembley Final and broke Preston's brave hearts.

North End fought and scrapped against a relentless United onslaught for an hour, but finally cracked in the 60th minute when Halford scored with a towering header to seal a 2-1 aggregate success.

In the latest round of cricket's Friends Provident Trophy games, Eoin Morgan was in fine form as Middlesex beat Kent by 80 runs.

He scored a superb 160 in a partnership of 277 for the third wicket with opener Nick Compton (131) as Middlesex posted 322-5 in the Group B match at Canterbury.

Kent struggled in their reply, eventually managing just 242 as they lost by 80 runs with Geraint Jones (57) and Justin Kemp (69) providing the only resistance.

Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth both scored centuries as Group B leaders Somerset beat Scotland by 151 runs at Taunton.

Trescothick (144) and Hildreth (151) helped Somerset reach 403-3, their highest ever 50-over score, as they shared a second-wicket stand of 270.

Peter Trego smashed 74 not out off just 39 balls before Scotland replied with a respectable 252-9 - Gavin Hamilton making 62, Ryan Watson 67 and Neil McCallum 50.

In Group C, Gloucestershire beat Yorkshire by three wickets with four balls remaining at Bristol.

Yorkshire recovered from 49-5 to eventually score 217-9 with Jon Lewis (4-43) and James Franklin (3-38) impressing for the Gladiators.

Franklin (51 not out) and Steve Adshead (56) were the main contributors as the hosts edged home.

Sussex beat Durham by 56 runs at Hove after reaching 313 thanks largely to Ed Joyce's 127. James Kirtley then took a career-best 6-50 as the Dynamos failed to reach their target.

In the Indian Premier League, the Deccan Chargers secured a 53-run win over the Rajasthan Royals at Kimberley.
