Golfing fans' focus turns to this week's Dubai Desert Classic with the winner set to pocket almost Euros 300,000.

A strong field will be present for the event with Paul Casey, 2009 Race To Dubai winner Lee Westwood and last year's victor Rory McIlroy featuring in the Gulf state.

Martin Kaymer, who recently won the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, will be looking to continue his excellent record in the United Arab Emirates, and he sits in third place in the Race To Dubai rankings at this early stage.

South African Charl Schwartzel will be keen to continue his fine early season form following his back-to-back successes in his homeland last month.

He finished tied in 14th at the Qatar Masters last week, which was won in convincing fashion by Sweden's Robert Karlsson, who also figures.

Karlsson sits second in the Race To Dubai standings thanks in the main to the pay cheque he picked up in Qatar.

Schwartzel heads the table after his successes at the Africa Open and Joburg Open.

McIlroy will be out to make history in the most prestigious of the three tournaments that make up the European Tour's Gulf Swing as he aims to claim the distinctive Arabian coffee pot trophy again.

He announced himself on the world stage when he won his maiden tour win and, after finishing third at his season's opener in Abu Dhabi a fortnight ago, looks good to go on and improve further still.

The competition has gave the Northern Irishman some great memories and he said: "After what happened last year, the Desert Classic will always have a special place in my heart.

"Your maiden victory on the European Tour is always a wonderful moment and it was made all the more special to have my mum and dad there beside the 18th green watching me hole the winning putt."

Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros are illustrious past winners of the event that made its debut back in 1989, with the inaugural event being claimed by Mark James.

McIlroy, Kaymer, Westwood and Karlsson are the leading online sportsbook favourites to land the top prize in what is an open looking field.
