Melbourne misery for Lewis

Author: Craig Williams
Date: 02/04/2009

Lewis Hamilton has been disqualified from last weekend's Australian Grand Prix after providing 'misleading' evidence during a hearing held after the race.

The reigning world champion was initially promoted from fourth to third place after Jarno Trulli was handed a 25-second time penalty for passing his McLaren under the safety car during the closing laps of the Melbourne race.

However, stewards decided to reinvestigate the matter after 'fresh evidence came to light' and Hamilton has now been disqualified and stripped of the six points he was initially handed.

Meanwhile, Trulli's penalty has been withdrawn and he has won his podium place back.

Alan Shearer accepts he faces a tough job trying to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League after being conformed as manager at St James Park.

The former Magpies great steps in to fill the gap left by Joe Kinnear, who is currently recovering from heart surgery, for the last eight games of the season.

Online betting sportsbooks have shortened Newcastle's odds of surviving the drop under Shearer, but its a big ask.

Coaches Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood will continue in their roles, while Iain Dowie joins the club as Shearer's number two. Dennis Wise has left his position as executive director (football).

Southampton's Championship future has been brought into fresh doubt following confirmation that the club's holding company has gone into administration.

The 23rd-placed Saints saw shares in the holding company suspended on Wednesday and restructuring specialists Begbies Traynor have now been appointed joint administrators.

Chief executive Rupert Lowe, chairman Michael Wilde and director Andrew Cowen have resigned from the company with immediate effect.

West Ham United have confirmed that Carlton Cole is set to spend the next six weeks on the sidelines with the thigh problem he picked up during England's friendly international win against Slovakia on Saturday.

In rugby league, Salford City Reds have lost winger Paul White to a season-ending knee injury.

Last year's leading try scorer lasted just 30 minutes of the 48-12 defeat to Hull KR last weekend and will now not play again for the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, in rugby union, Worcester props Chris Horsman and Tevita Taumoepeau, as well as flanker Matt Cox, have been told they will play no more rugby this season and join a long injury list that already includes Chris Latham and Sam Tuitupou.

Wales international Horsman has a neck problem, while Tonga star Taumoepeau recently underwent shoulder surgery.

Cox will have an operation on Friday after dislocating his shoulder during the weekend defeat at rock-bottom Bristol.

In cricket, Michael Vaughan has been named in the MCC side to play reigning county champions Durham at Lord's.

The 34-year-old former England captain is hoping to secure an international recall for the upcoming Ashes series and will hope to impress in the season's curtain-raiser next week.
