While Murray was racing into the second week, sixth seed Andy Roddick needed four tough sets to see off Austria's Jurgen Melzer, while eighth seed Gilles Simon saw off Victor Hanescu of Romania in straight sets.

Twelfth seed Nikolay Davydenko was not so successful, as he was thrashed 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 by Tomas Berdych, the 20th seed from the Czech Republic.

Eleventh seed Marin Cilic also made his exit, finally succumbing to Germany's Tommy Haas in a marathon five-setter which had started on Friday.

Resuming at 6-6 in the final set, Haas made the crucial break soon after and held his serve to wrap up a 7-5, 7-5, 1-6, 6-7, 10-8 victory.

In the women's draw world number one and top seed Dinara Safina raced into round four with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, while Venus Williams had few problems in overpowering Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0, 6-4.

However, fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and sixth seed Jelena Jankovic both crashed out.

French Open champion Kuznetsova surrendered tamely 6-2, 7-5 to German teenager Sabine Lisicki, while Jankovic fell 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 to 17-year-old qualifier Melanie Oudin of the USA.

Morne Steyn's last-gasp penalty helped South Africa hit back from 11 points down to beat the British & Irish Lions 28-25 in a thrilling second Test in Pretoria.

It seemed as though the action-packed encounter would end in a draw until Ronan O'Gara conceded a penalty in the closing seconds and the deadly Steyn knocked his long-range effort straight between the posts.

In a mirror-image of last weekend's first Test, the Lions dominated the first hour and led 18-9 with 19 minutes left, only to run out of steam as the Springboks sealed a famous win to clinch the series.

Australia's first tour match ahead of the Ashes series ended in a draw, as Sussex came close to pulling off a shock victory.

Chasing 418 for victory on the final day of the four-day encounter at Hove, the hosts reached 378-7 by the close of play, as the Aussie attack struggled to make any headway.

Carl Hopkinson led the way with a superb 115, after Sussex skipper Michael Yardy had got things going with a patient 67.

None of the visitors' attack showed up well, with only Ben Hilfenhaus and Marcus North taking more than one wicket.

In rugby league's Super League, the Catalans Dragons secured a tense 22-20 victory at Castleford Tigers.
