Home favourite Andy Murray survived a five-set marathon against Stanislas Wawrinka to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Murray eventually set up a meeting with Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero in the last eight by edging home 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, in a match which ended after 10.30pm under the recently-installed roof on the Centre Court at SW19.

Sportsbook second favourite Murray looked to be deep in trouble at two sets to one behind, but he broke trough to level the match and then held his nerve as both players visibly wilted.

Ferrero reached the quarter-finals by sweeping aside eighth seed Gilles Simon in straight sets, while the other tie in the bottom half of the draw sees former champion Lleyton Hewitt face two-time runner-up Andy Roddick.

Roddick had no problems despatching Tomas Berdych, but Hewitt had to come back from two sets down to beat Radek Stepanek 4-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

In a repeat of the French Open final, Roger Federer was too strong for Robin Soderling, with a straight sets success setting up a meeting in the last eight with the big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic.

Karlovic reached the quarters by eventually subduing seventh seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

The final quarter-final tie sees fourth seed Novak Djokovic take on Tommy Haas, following victories over Duda Sela and Igor Andreev respectively.

In the women's draw, top seed Dinara Safina edged into the last eight with a hard-fought three-set win over Amelie Mauresmo, the Russian eventually prevailing 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Both Venus and Serena Williams had few problems in securing quarter-final spots, with the former aided by Ana Ivanovic being forced to retire through injury.

Unseeded German Sabine Lisicki sprang a surprise as she beat ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-4, backing up her win over French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in fine style.

England's hopes of glory at the UEFA European Under-21s Championship were dashed as they were thrashed 4-0 by Germany in the final in Malmo.

Gonzalo Castro opened the scoring after 23 minutes in Malmo and shortly after half-time it was 2-0 when Mesut Ozil's long-range free-kick deceived goalkeeper Scott Loach and trickled into the back of the net.

As England pushed forward looking for a way back into the game, they were twice hit on the break, with Sandro Wagner's two late finishes rubbing salt into the wounds.

In the first women's cricket one-day international between England and Australia at Chelmsford, the hosts romped to a nine-wicket win after bowling the tourists out for just 133.
