Number two seed Andy Murray suffered a disappointing defeat in the last 16 of the US Open as he was swept aside in straight sets by Croatia's Marin Cilic.

Great Britain ace Murray had been hotly tipped to mount a strong challenge for the title at Flushing Meadows, having reached the final last year before losing out to five-time champion and sportsbook favourite Roger Federer.

However, Murray's hopes of glory were shattered by Cilic, who won 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 thanks to an assured display of power hitting from the back of the court.

Murray admitted after his shock exit: "The way the match went makes it disappointing, but I believe I will come back better from it.

"I will learn from this week like I have most weeks when I've lost and I will come back better and stronger.

"I'm very disappointed I didn't win, but I played badly and didn't deserve to. I started the match well, but when I lost the first set and went behind I started making a lot of silly mistakes.

"That was one of the most disappointing things, that I couldn't come back when I'm usually able to find a way back in."

He said: "It's always easier doing rehabilitation in warm weather and that's the main reason why we've decided to go to Dubai."
