No relay place for Chambers

Author: Sir David Smith
Date: 09/03/2009

Dwain Chambers has been left out of Great Britain's 4x100 metres relay team to take part in the World Championships in Berlin in August.

The 30-year-old, who won gold in the 60 metres at the European Indoor Championships in Turin at the weekend, was given a lifetime Olympic ban following a two-year suspension for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.

UK Athletics chief Charles van Commenee insists he has made the decision because Chambers will not be taking part in the told 2012 Olympic Games and not for comments the athlete made in his autobiography.

In cricket, Australia batsman Phillip Hughes has spoken of his delight at becoming the youngest player to score two centuries in the same Test match.

The 20-year-old left-hander recorded tons in both innings of the second Test against South Africa in Durban to beat the previous landmark set by former West Indies great George Headley.

Hughes admitted after his heroics: "It's a very special moment, something I'll never forget and I'm just really excited.

"I knew if I just kept going and batting there was a big one for the taking. I was determined not to give it away after I got a start."

In football, Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been ruled out of the Champions League clash against AS Roma because of a hamstring injury.

The Togo international has been sidelined for the last month with the problem and is still some way short of match-fitness, although The Gunners remain betting favourites to win the match with Kolo Toure, Eduardo and Theo Walcott all expected to feature.

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun could miss his side's Champions League clash against Real Madrid after suffering a hamstring injury in training.

The Israel international will have a scan on the problem to see how long he will be sidelined for, while Reds boss Rafa Benitez is also monitoring the fitness of Fernando Torres, Alvaro Arbeloa and Daniel Agger.

Albert Riera definitely misses the last 16 second leg encounter at Anfield, as he is suspended after being booked in the 1-0 win at the Bernabeu a fortnight ago.

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole is confident he will be ready to take part in pre-season training as he continues his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury.

The 27-year-old England international has been sidelined since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in the FA Cup third round replay victory at Southend United in January.

Finally, Manchester United will face Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals, while Chelsea lie in wait for the winners of the sixth round meeting of Arsenal and Hull City.
