Darren Ferguson has been confirmed as the new manager of Preston North End after agreeing a three-and-a-half year contract.

Ferguson, 37, was one of the favourites to take the managerial reins at Deepdale following the Championship club's decision to part company with predecessor Alan Irvine last week.

Irvine was axed with the club languishing down in 16th place in the Championship table.

Ferguson, who is the son of Manchester United boss Sir Alex, was himself available after leaving fellow Championship strugglers Peterborough United in November.

Manchester City have posted massive losses for the 12-month period to May 31 2009.

The annual losses total £92.6million and do not include last summer's massive transfer outlay when the likes of Gareth Barry and Emmanuel Adebayor arrived at Eastlands.

Meanwhile, Patrick Vieira has dropped a strong hint that he is set to join City in the current transfer window.

The 33-year-old Internazionale midfielder has been strongly linked with a return to the Premier League with the Eastlands club.

In cricket, sportsbook series favourites England will not face any investigation from the International Cricket Council following the ball tampering row which has emerged during the third Test against South Africa.

The ICC has confirmed that, since no official complaint was lodged to match referee Roshan Mahanama by South Africa before the start of the fourth day's play in Cape Town, there could be no investigation.

South Africa had earlier 'raised their concerns' after footage appeared to show England seamer James Anderson picking at the ball during the third day at Newlands.

Fellow seamer Stuart Broad had courted controversy when he appeared to put his studs on the ball in the process of stopping a drive with the sole of his boot.

Elsewhere, Former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore has no immediate plans to return to Formula One despite winning an appeal over his lifetime ban from the sport.

The 59-year-old Italian saw his FIA-imposed ban for his part in a race-fixing scandal back in 2008 lifted by a French court on Tuesday.

Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr was found to have deliberately crashed his car in order to help his then team-mate Fernando Alonso win the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.

However, despite speaking of his delight at winning back his 'dignity and freedom', Briatore won't be rushing back into Formula One any time soon.

"I want to enjoy myself and take care of my family," he said. "My wife is pregnant and in three months I will have a baby. I want to enjoy my life.

"I am just happy to be clear and for the result of the court in Paris."
