Rio de Janeiro will become the first city in South America to host the Summer Olympics after winning the vote for the 2016 games.

A meeting in the Danish capital Copenhagen ended in delight for Brazil, after Rio beat off competition from Chicago, Tokyo and finally Madrid.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said: "All four projects are of the highest quality - thank you for your hard work, energy and commitment.

"But in every competition there can only be one winner."

England captain Andrew Strauss was left to accept the fact that his side had been well beaten in their dismal nine-wicket defeat by Australia in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy.

England made 257 all out after opting to bat first at Centurion Park, but were unable to trouble the Baggy Greens, with both Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting making unbeaten centuries.

Afterwards, a downbeat Strauss commented: "We were definitely keen to go out there and play our shots on a very good wicket and unfortunately it didn't come off.

"You live by the sword and you die by the sword."

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has dismissed rumours linking him with an imminent departure from White Hart Lane.

Rumours had begun to circulate that Redknapp could be about to exit Spurs, despite them enjoying a fine start to the new season, with a return to troubled Portsmouth being mentioned as one possible option.

However, Redknapp told reporters: "I'm definitely not leaving, it's absolute nonsense. Absolute rubbish.

"I couldn't be happier than I am here. There's not a chance of that happening.

"I love it here and I have no intention of leaving. It couldn't have gone better for me."
