In football, Craig Levein is the new manager of Scotland after agreeing a two-and-a-half year contract with the Scottish Football Association.

Dundee United have confirmed that Levein will be leaving Tannadice with immediate effect to succeed George Burley as Scotland boss.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident that striker Robin van Persie will make a full recovery from a serious ankle injury, but does not expect the Dutchman to return to action this season.

The forward damaged ankle ligaments in a friendly international against Italy last month and is expected to be out for at least five months following surgery.

Sunderland defender Michael Turner has picked up a four-game ban following his dismissal at Manchester City last weekend.

The former Hull City man received his marching orders for serious foul play and was initially handed a three-match suspension.

He was sent off following an aerial clash with England midfielder Gareth Barry during the 4-3 defeat.

Steve Bruce appealed against the ruling but the FA decided to increase the penalty to four games while the Black Cats manager has also been asked to come forward and explain his post-match comments following Turner's dismissal.

In cricket, New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has been forced to retire from Test cricket because of his injury problems.

The 34-year-old plans to continue playing one-day and Twenty20 matches for his country but, after taking 87 wickets in 18 Test appearances, will not feature in any more five-day games for the Black Caps.

In rugby union, key trio Matt Banahan, David Barnes and Pieter Dixon have all agreed new contracts with Bath while injured forward Denis Leamy will miss the rest of the season for Munster and Ireland, who are one of the favourites to win the 2010 Six Nations tournament.

The 28-year-old back rower will sit out the remainder of the domestic and European campaign for Munster plus Ireland's defence of their Six Nations crown in the spring with a serious knee injury.

Leamy picked up the injury during Munster's 37-14 win over Perpignan in the Heineken Cup last weekend.
