India legend Sachin Tendulkar has become the first man in history to make a double century in a one-day international.

The 36-year-old right-hander reached the landmark in the second ODI against South Africa in the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior.

Tendulkar ended on an unbeaten 200, made from just 147 balls faced and including 25 fours and three sixes, as India topped the 400-mark from their 50 overs.

His efforts wiped from the record books innings of 194 not out and 194 respectively from Charles Coventry of Zimbabwe and former Pakistan opening batsman Saeed Anwar.

Tendulkar's innings saw him reach three figures for the 46th time in one-day internationals - also a world record.

He also has a world record 47 Test centuries to his name and is the all-time highest run-scorer in both forms of the game.

Veteran Australia fast bowler Brett Lee has confirmed his retirement from Test cricket, but he will play on in the shorter forms of the game.

The 33-year-old has been blighted by injuries in the last couple of years and has decided to call time on his Test career after 76 matches and 310 wickets at an average of 30.81.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will miss this weekend's Carling Cup final after suffering renewed problems with a back injury.

The 31-year-old is also highly unlikely to be fit for England's friendly with Egypt next week, in which he was expected to lead the national team following the recent axing of former skipper John Terry.

After seeing Ferdinand miss the 3-0 win over West Ham, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson commented: "He tweaked his back in training and he won't be ready for Sunday."

Chelsea and former England captain John Terry is on a mission to help both his club and his country to glory in the coming months.

Allegations over Terry's private life have dominated the headlines on recent times, with the 30-year-old now eager to retain his focus on on-field matters ahead of a crucial few months.

He told The Sun: "I'm responding by doing what I've always done - by looking straight ahead. I've got broad shoulders and nobody's going to knock me out of my stride.

"I am strong enough and passionate enough to know I will carry on delivering my best for club and country. Absolutely nothing will change."

Liverpool's star striker Fernando Torres will only feature as a substitute in the Europa League first knockout round second leg game against Unirea Urziceni.

The 25-year-old Spain international made a surprise return to action in the goalless draw with Manchester City at the weekend, having recently been sidelined by knee problems.

However, Reds boss Rafa Benitez is not about to take chances on Torres being able to start a game just yet.
