Tiger Woods has announced that he will take an indefinite break from golf while he tries to repair the damage caused by recent off-course events.
The 33-year-old has admitted for the first time that he has been unfaithful to wife Elin, with the rumour mill having been in overdrive since a car crash outside his Florida home late last month.
A statement on Woods' official website read: "I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children.
"I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I've done, but I want to do my best to try.
"I would like to ask everyone, including my fans, the good people at my foundation, business partners, the PGA Tour, and my fellow competitors, for their understanding.
"What's most important now is that my family has the time, privacy and safe haven we will need for personal healing.
"After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person."

In football, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that both Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will be offered new contracts to extend their illustrious Old Trafford careers by a further 12 months.
Thirty-six-year-old Giggs and thirty-five-year-old Scholes have been instrumental in United's success for well over a decade and Ferguson is adamant that the duo have plenty more to give to the Red Devils' cause.
"Ryan will be offered a new contract for next season, which is an indication of what we think of him coming up to 37 next season, Paul knows he will be offered one as well.
"Ryan is an example to young people. He has humility and he has never changed and I think he is having his best years now."
Chief executive Peter Trembling has completed a management buy-out of League Two sportsbook favourites Notts County from previous owners Munto Finance.
Trembling's buy-out means that Sven-Goran Eriksson is likely to remain at Meadow Lane as director of football.
"We have restructured the ownership of the football club in order to secure new and prolonged investment," said Trembling.
"We anticipate this will be an ongoing process."
