United close in on Owen

Author: Sir David Smith
Date: 04/07/2009

Manchester United are closing in one of the most unlikely transfers of the summer so far with Michael Owen undergoing a medical at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old striker is available on a free transfer following the end of his contract with Newcastle United and is set to be handed the chance to rebuild his floundering career with the Premier League champions.

Sir Alex Ferguson has £80million to spend following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo and the likes of Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery were among the online betting favourites to be on their way to the Red Devils.

However, Ferguson seems set to take a chance on a player whose terrible run of injuries during four seasons on Tyneside has seen him lose his place in the England squad.

Chelsea have rejected a second offer from Manchester City for their captain John Terry.

The Blues and England skipper was the subject of one unsuccessful bid from the ambitious Eastlands club following the end of the last Premier League season in May.

Chelsea snubbed that approach and have warned City that the 28-year-old defender is not for sale at any price.

Arsene Wenger is confident that Emmanuel Adebayor will start the new season as part of his Arsenal squad.

The Togo striker has been mentioned as a possible transfer target for AC Milan for the second year in a row, but Wenger doesn't believe Adebayor will be on the move this summer.

The 25-year-old striker flirted with the Italian giants 12 months ago before opting to stay at the Emirates Stadium and sign a new long-term contract.

In rugby union, South Africa forward Schalk Burger insists he is 'not a thug' following the eye-gouging incident which has led to a lengthy ban.

Flanker Burger will miss the next eight weeks - including Saturday's final Test against the British & Irish Lions - after being found guilty of making contact with the eyes of Lions wing Luke Fitzgerald during last weekend's second encounter.

Burger has been at the centre of a media storm since the incident in Pretoria, but the player himself insists he is not dirty. However, he has stopped short of issuing an apology to Fitzgerald.

Meanwhile, Nicky Henderson has been fined a record £40,000 and will not be able to train horses for three months after being found guilty of a doping offence.

Last week he was found to have breached rules after Moonlit Path, which he trains for the Queen, failed a drugs test.
