Vital victory for Spurs

Author: Sir David Smith
Date: 24/02/2009

Jonathan Woodgate's late goal has eased Tottenham Hotspur's relegation fears with Monday evening's 2-1 victory at Hull City moving Harry Redknapp's side up to 14th place in the Premier League table.

Spurs took the lead in the first half through Aaron Lennon, but an equaliser from Hull's Michael Turner saw the scores level at half-time.

But with just minutes left, Woodgate rose highest to seal the win for the north London club and provide a timely morale boost ahead of Sunday's Carling Cup Final meeting with betting favourites Manchester United at Wembley.

The priceless victory against a side also toiling in the wrong half of the table lifted Spurs five points clear of the drop zone.

In League Two, Wycombe Wanderers' promotion push continues to falter after they were held to a goalless draw at home by Rotherham United.

Peter Taylor's side missed the opportunity to move level on points with leaders Brentford after the frustrating stalemate at Adams Park.

However, the Chairboys do still have a game in hand on the majority of their rivals for automatic promotion rivals.

Britain's tennis number one Andy Murray will face Arnaud Clement or Rainer Schuettler in the second round of the Dubai Championships after overcoming Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Stakhovsky eventually retired through injury with the scores in the first round encounter 6-7, 3-7, 6-3, 5-3 in Murray's favour, but it was an uncomfortable opening game for the Scot, who was also troubled by an ankle problem.

Murray was forced to miss last week's ATP tournament in Marseille due to the same injury.

England's cricketers warmed up for Thursday's fourth Test against West Indies with a drawn encounter with a Barbados President's XI.

Several fringe members of the touring party hoping to force their way into the reckoning for the Test in Barbados took the opportunity to shine as Kent seamer Amjad Khan took 5-79 as the home side were dismissed for 245.

Batsman Ian Bell also bagged some much needed runs as his 72 helped England reach 142-2 in their second innings.

Alastair Cook also claimed a half-century and some valuable time in the middle.

Over in Karachi, the runs continue to flow as Pakistan reached 296-3 at close of play on day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Captain Younus Khan ended the day unbeaten on 149 as Pakistan look to close in on Sri Lanka's mammoth 644-7 declared first-innings total in a match which now seems destined for a draw.
