Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has refused to confirm or deny that he is seeking to bring former Gunners great Patrick Vieira back to the club.

The 33-year-old French midfielder currently plays his football in Italy with Internazionale, but is thought to be considering a move away from the San Siro.

Wenger told reporters: "We are nowhere near to making a decision like that, but it is a possibility.

"We do not rule it out and we do not say we will do it - that is my decision at the moment."

Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has issued an apology following the Twitter row that erupted on Thursday.

The former Charlton Athletic star criticised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy on his social networking site for allegedly holding up his proposed transfer to Sunderland.

However, in a statement on Spurs' official website, Bent said: "I appreciate that transfers are seldom straightforward and are often complex."

AS Roma's Italy international midfielder Daniele De Rossi has dismissed renewed rumours linking him with a move to England to join Arsenal.

The 26-year-old has been mentioned as a target for several clubs in England, but De Rossi insists that he is in no rush to leave the Italian capital.

De Rossi told the Italian media: "Arsenal? I have not heard anything. Roma have said I am not for sale and I only want to stay here.

"Obviously things would change if Roma wanted to sell me, but they have always wanted to keep me."

In rugby union, New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter has made his first top flight rugby appearance since rupturing his Achilles.

Carter figured for Canterbury in their Air New Zealand Cup clash with North Harbour on Saturday.

Canterbury lost the game 22-19, with North Harbour staging a late comeback.

Somerset's former England opener Marcus Trescothick has become the first man to pass 1,000 first-class runs this season.

The 33-year-old left-hander passed the mark in the County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire at Taunton on Friday.

Paul Farbrace will succeed Graham Ford as first-team coach at Kent next summer, with the South African not returning due to family reasons.

Meanwhile, the Spitfires have been boosted by the news that South Africa fast bowler Wayne Parnell will be available for Twenty20 Cup finals day.

The 20-year-old left-armer was due to head home and remain in South Africa next week, but Parnell will turn out for Kent at least one more time.
