Super Bowl 51 betting tips: Patriots the pick for Super Bowl success

2017-01-31
A betting preview for Super Bowl 51 between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons in Houston on Sunday night.

New England Patriots face Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51 on Sunday night and 888sport have a variety of markets for the climax to the NFL season. Here are our suggested bets for the showdown in Houston:

Super Bowl 51: MATCH BETTING

Selection: New England Patriots @ 13/20

The Matt Ryan-led Falcons managed 33.8 points per game in the regular season, the seventh best total of all time, and a further 80 in two play-off games highlights just how big a task New England have.

However, give Bill Belichick two weeks to prepare a gameplan and the likelihood is he will cook something up to nullify his opponents. He boasts arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, this year's number-one ranked defence and a knowledge of how to win these big contests. That will see them over the line.

TOTAL POINTS

Selection: Under 58.5 @ 22/25

Given Atlanta's offensive prowess, it is no surprise to see the spread on the total points set at the greatest amount it has ever been in Super Bowl history. In their past six games, they have averaged a staggering 39 points, while New England themselves have averaged 32 over the same time period.

Yet both defences have to be factored into the equation. The Falcons' improving unit have given up only 17.3 points on average per game in their past six encounters, while the Patriots have given up just 12.6. Only one of the past 12 Super Bowls has had more than 58.5 points and these defences can keep this one lower scoring than some expect.

TOUCHDOWN SCORER

Selection: Julian Edelman @ 8/11

Even if the game is not a 60-point thriller, touchdowns can be virtually guaranteed. On New England's side, wide receiver Julian Edelman could have another big day having snagged the touchdown-winning grab in the Super Bowl two years ago. He has garnered 10 or more targets in eight of the last nine games and is clearly Brady's favourite weapon.

For Atlanta, number-one receiver Julio Jones will command extra attention from the Pats, who could look to try and take him out of the game as they did with Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown. Mohamed Sanu (33/20 to score a touchdown) may benefit most from that and he has reeled in end-zone grabs in each of his last three appearances.

Super Bowl 51: MVP odds

Selection: Tom Brady @ 9/10

Not only is history on Brady's side - 27 of the 50 Super Bowl MVP awards have been won by quarterbacks - fate is too. Commissioner Roger Goodell was the man who sanctioned a four-game suspension against Brady for the 'deflategate' saga. How fitting it would be if a season that started on the sidelines were to end with Goodell handing the MVP award over to Brady on the podium at NRG Stadium.

Otherwise, perhaps one of Brady's weapons will steal the honour - and Edelman, at 18/1, and Chris Hogan, at 33/1, could be decent outside shouts.
