A month or so ago, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked destined to join one of the Chinese Super League clubs this summer. Then two weeks ago, Manchester City were well backed to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker but nothing materialised.
Now, it is Chelsea’s turn to be linked with one of Europe’s hottest forwards – and a move to Stamford Bridge could actually be on the cards.
The defending Premier League champions, currently 7/2 to retain the title this season, are expecting to lose Diego Costa to Atletico Madrid before the transfer window shuts.
Despite scoring 52 goals in 89 top flight appearances since joining the Blues in 2014, Costa has never looked fully settled in west London and his latest antics on social media suggest that a move back to Spain might not be too far away.
Chelsea have claimed that they won’t be in any rush to replace Costa if the Brazilian does depart but a move for Aubameyang makes sense.
He won’t come cheap but the Dortmund star has plenty of big game experience and his goal scoring record is second to none. When it comes to hitting the back of the net, Aubameyang is up there with the Luis Suarez’s and Robert Lewandowski’s of European football.
At 4/6 to join Chelsea this summer, Aubameyang is certainly short enough but a transfer to Stamford Bridge looks very likely indeed.
If anyone has the money to sign the Gabon star, it is Chelsea – especially as multi-millionaire owner Roman Abramovich has been rather quiet in the window thus far. With the Community Shield fast approaching, Conte will be keen to get business complete as soon as possible.
If you believe the newspaper reports, Conte’s men are also interested in a surprise move for Manchester City star Sergio Aguero. Chelsea may have to fork out an extortionate figure to convince their title rivals to sell the Argentina man but it might be easy enough to convince Pep Guardiola.
The City boss hasn’t seen eye-to-eye with Aguero during his brief City tenure and Gabriel Jesus may see an increase in playing time.
As of July 17th, 888Sport are going 7/4 for Aguero to sign for Chelsea this summer – a bizarre transfer if ever there was one. Since moving to the Etihad Stadium, Aguero has blossomed into one of the deadliest finishers in world football and City will be wary of selling the 29 year old to a direct rival.
If the price is right, Guardiola may consider selling but the added complication of buying from a title competitor may tempt Chelsea to push even harder for Aubameyang.
Should Aubameyang’s potential move to Stamford Bridge fall through, a move to Italy could be the next step.
AC Milan have been one of Europe’s busiest clubs in the transfer window so far this summer and 888Sport are offering 5/2 on the Italian giants to sign Aubameyang. Although not the force that they once were, Milan are still a club stepped in history and the 28 year old may be tempted by the personal challenge of toppling Juventus in Serie A.
Chelsea fans, don’t get excited just yet – the club probably won’t move until Costa’s position is clear. Reports have claimed that Conte and Costa have fallen out and that could spell the end for the Spaniard’s career in west London.
Some fans will want Aguero but Aubameyang may be the better and more realistic option. If City are willing to consider offers for Aguero, something could fall into place but right now, it looks like Aubameyang could be leading the line at Stamford Bridge this season.
