What Is The Coronation Stakes?

The Coronation Stakes is a Group One race run over a mile and is open to three-year-old fillies only.

First run in 1840, the Coronation Stakes was upgraded to Group One status in 1988 and is often targeted by fillies that have competed in the 1000 Guineas in England, Ireland and France.

The last filly to claim the Guineas/Coronation double was Alpha Centauri in 2018.

In 2022 John & Thady Gosden's Inspiral (15/8 favourite) easily landed this coveted prize from Spendarella in second.

  • Age – three years olds only.

  • Price – 4 of the last 12 winners were favourites/joint favourites, 8/12 winners came from the top three in the Royal Ascot betting.

  • Last Run – 7/12 winners won on their last run before the Coronation Stakes, 10/12 winners had their last run within the last 47 days.

The two leading jockeys in the Coronation Stakes over the last 20 renewals are Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori who have both won the race twice each.

Moore won with Rizeena (2014) and Winter (2017) and Dettori won with Alpine Star (2020) and Inspiral (2022).
