Horse Racing - Upcoming Races

Shishkin was the headline maker last weekend after winning the Denman Chase at Newbury. That was an important run for the Nicky Henderson-trained charge, who had produced an indifferent start to the season.

The 10-year-old had refused to race in his seasonal renewal at Ascot, before unseating jockey Nico de Boinville at Kempton in December. Looking positioned to strike in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, Shishkin stumbled, with De Boinville hitting the turf.

But Shishikin was still sent off as an 8-11 favourite on Saturday at Newbury, where he beat Hitman and Protektorat to take the victory in a good show of stamina. Always popular at the Cheltenham Festival, Shishkin will now head back there in March to target the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Other notable winners from Newbury were Iberico Lord in the Betfair Hurdle and Edwardstone in the Game Spirit Chase, who struck a massive victory by 40 lengths. Things continue to warm up nicely ahead of this year’s Cheltenham Festival, with plenty of big names putting in final appearances to fine-tune their preparations.

There are not too many big features between now and the start of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, which opens on March 12th with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Cheltenham Gold Cup betting this year falls on March 15th.

In a slight change of pace, Haydock is worth a look next Saturday, as the Grand National Trial Handicap Chase gets its outing. My Silver Lining, trained by Emma Lavelle, is the current ante-post favourite for the fixture after not having finished outside the top two in his last five outings, claiming three wins in the process.

Other notable contenders in the testing 3m 4f contest are Jonjo O’Neill’s Iron Bridge, along with Credo and Famous Bridge. There are 21 fences in the contest and as the name suggests, this is an important trail ahead of the Aintree Grand National, which takes place on Saturday, 13th April.

The pick of the upcoming Irish racing scene is the Grand National Trial Handicap Chase from Punchestown. This is also a big prep race for the 2024 Grand National and the set-up is the same distance and number of fences as the counterpart trial at Newbury.

FAQs

How do you bet on horse racing online?

Betting on races online is quite similar to how you would bet if you were at the racecourse – only you don’t have to be there in person.

Once you have found a race you’re interested in, simply click on the card to discover the latest racing odds and then choose the horse you feel you want to wager on.

You will then be able to view your betting options, place your stake, and click through to bet.

What types of bets are there in horse racing?

When it comes to betting on horse races, you’ll quickly discover there are many different types. Probably the most common is a single bet, which involves just one race and one outcome. However, there are many other options too.

What is an Each Way Bet?

Another popular bet is an each-way bet, which is essentially split into two parts with one half involving a win and the other a place in a pay-out position. It’s possible for punters to put a stake on multiple races too, with bets such as an accumulator, double and single, or even placepots and jackpots involving a whole day’s racing at one course.

What do the odds mean in horse racing?

When you’re looking at the latest odds for betting at horse racing, the number presented represents the amount of money you can expect to win as a return.

For example, if a horse’s odds are 10/1, for each ‘unit’ you bet, you will receive 10 in return plus your stake – if you win. So if successfully you bet £1 for a horse to win at 10/1, you’ll receive £10, plus your £1 stake, totalling £11.
