Away form is often what separates the Premier League betting contenders from the also-rans. The best teams aren’t settling for many draws on the road. Instead, they pair formidable home form with plenty of away wins.

It’s a proof of character when a team is fearless going away from home. Teams taking the leap from mid-table to European contention often already have a decent home record but need to take their away results to a new level to be really taken seriously as a potential top-six team.

There are challenges that come with Premier League away days. It often involves travelling and staying in a hotel.

Players are away from their home comforts and might even have to deal with less-than-optimal facilities at the opponent’s ground.

Some sides seem to develop a real mental block about going on the road. It can be due to a manager’s tactics away from home, like David Moyes never winning away to big six clubs, or it can be about a team not enjoying the atmosphere of tens of thousands of fans against you.

The introduction of VAR has – in theory – limited the impact of the home crowd on refereeing decisions. It’s still a less than pleasant experience going away to a Premier League ground where each mistake is jeered, fans are fired up, and your away support can barely be heard.

It’s harder to overcome adversity away from home. It’s only natural that teams and players are less comfortable away than at home.
