Ever-Present Brazil
Brazil are the only country to have appeared at every edition of the World Cup. Five-time champions, Brazil are the most successful country in the tournament’s history, though they haven’t been crowned world champions since 2002.
From Pelé to Romário, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, and Ronaldinho, the Canarinho have been adored around the world for their flair and star power. They are the most recent country to win back-to-back titles, too.
European and South American Mainstays
Germany (21) and Argentina (19) are the only other countries to have appeared in more than 18 World Cups.
Germany have reached the most finals (eight) in tournament history, while Argentina have reached six finals and won three titles across their 19 World Cup ventures.
Mexico have never been beyond the last eight, but they have been World Cup regulars. Favourable qualifying in North America has certainly helped. Italy, meanwhile, are four-time world champions and have appeared in 18 World Cups.
Notably, only two of Italy’s titles have come since 1938 and the Azzurri have failed to qualify for the last three World Cups after suffering group-stage exits in 2010 and 2014.
What Counts as an Appearance?
A World Cup finals appearance is not the same as reaching the final. Qualifying for the tournament itself counts as appearing at the World Cup regardless of a team’s performance.
Many of the teams listed above have had times when they automatically qualified for the World Cup. Hosts qualify for each World Cup without having to go through the arduous qualification process.
Defending champions automatically qualified for the next World Cup from 1930 until 1998 – 2002 was the first edition that didn’t see the previous winners given an automatic tournament berth.
Milestones from 2026
By qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Argentina broke a tie with Italy to sit alone in third. The Czech Republic reached their 10th World Cup finals. Switzerland and Sweden moved level with Serbia on 13 World Cup appearances after the Eagles failed to qualify.
Cape Verde, Jordan, Uzbekistan, and Curaçao debuted in the 2026 World Cup, taking the number of nations to have appeared at a World Cup to 84.
Haiti and DR Congo ended 52-year World Cup droughts, Iraq appeared in only their second World Cup and first since 1986, and 2022 semifinalists Morocco made it three consecutive World Cup appearances for the first time in their history.
