Football Predictions Thursday

Georgia v Luxembourg

We kick off the first of six Euro 2024 play-off games on Thursday night in Tbilisi, as Georgia come up against Luxembourg.

Both of these sides have done really well to get to this stage of the competition, Georgia finished fourth in their group which included nations such as Spain (First), Scotland (Second), Norway (Third) and Cyprus (Fifth), Georgia might feel a little disappointed actually, that they couldn’t take advantage of the Norwegians inconsistent form throughout the group stage and finish above them to guarantee automatic qualification, although they should be proud of their performances and still have a chance to progress here.

The home side will be without their main man though, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who plays his club football for Napoli, after he picked up three yellow cards in the group stage fixtures, a big miss. Georgian football is in a great position at the moment, you’ve only got to look at the Under 21 squad, who finished top of their group last summer despite competing against Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands to name a few.

Luxembourg surprised a lot of people during their campaign, the Red Lions won five of their ten games in the group stages resulting in a third-place finish, given they entered this campaign winning only eight of their 117 matches in EURO qualifying history, it’s a massive achievement and they will want to continue to impress and secure themselves a play-off final against either Greece or Kazakhstan.

There’s a lot on the line here, I think we’ll see a close, edgy affair with a narrow home win.

Greece v Kazakhstan

Gus Poyet will take charge of his 20th game in charge as the Greece manager on Thursday night when his side welcome Kazakhstan to Athens in the Path C, Euro 2024 play-off semi final.

The Uruguayan is already dreaming about what could happen in Germany in June, "Knowing the possible group we will be part of, it makes qualifying even more important," he said. "The possibility of a derby against Türkiye, the chance of a lifetime to face Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo, and measuring our strength against Czechia increases our desire to go to the EURO. But of course we have a lot of respect and have to concentrate on the tough matches of the play-offs, starting with Kazakhstan”.

Greece managed to finish third in Group B, a group which included France (First), Netherlands (Second), Republic of Ireland (Fourth) and Gibraltar (Fifth). They managed four wins from their eight games, one draw and three loses.
The home side will be full of confidence heading into this fixture, they’ve won three of their last fives games across all competitions and they got themselves a 2-2 draw last time out against World Cup finalists, France.

Kazakhstan have never qualified for a major tournament but they’ll feel this is their big chance, given the form they find themselves in, having won seven of their last ten games, including victories over Denmark, Northern Ireland and Finland. They will be without centre-back Nuraly Alip for this fixture who is serving a suspension following his three yellow cards in the group stages.

It won’t be easy for Greece but with the home advantage, I think it’ll be enough to seem them progress into the final.

Israel v Iceland

Israel and Iceland will face off in Budapest on Thursday evening in the Path B, Euro 2024 play-off semi-final, where the winner will go on to face either Bosnia and Herzegovina or Ukraine in the final.

Israel impressed in Group I and probably felt a little unlucky not to make the automatic places, finishing just two points behind Switzerland. Romania topped the group of 22 points, Belarus finished fourth, Kosovo fifth and Andorra ended the campaign at the foot of the group.

Israel have to go again here and show the world what they are capable of on their day, they are an entertaining team to watch, both teams have scored on the day in fifteen of their last twenty games across all competitions, add this to the head to head fixtures with Iceland, where each of the last 3 games have produced at least 4 goals, I think we’re in for another brilliant game here.

Iceland finished fourth in group J after winning only three of their 10 games, a little disappointing but they have a chance to put things right here and keep their Euro 2024 hopes alive. Manager Age Hareide fully believes his side has enough, "We're going to go to Germany," he said. "I have great faith in the team and the players. They are a talented and ambitious group, the staff and the framework of the team is first class, and we can get results with solidarity and good organisation."

The Norwegian and his Iceland side will have to overcome a little bit of history if he is to be proved correct, as Iceland haven’t beaten Israel in 5 attempts, (D3 L2), I’d be surprised if we don’t get entertainment in Budapest.

Bosnia and Herzegovina v Ukraine

Bosnia and Herzegovina welcome Ukraine to the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica on Thursday evening, where the winners of the tie will face Israel or Iceland in the play-off final.

I think it’s fair to say Bosnia and Herzegovina really disappointed in their group, finishing fifth from a possible sixth after winning just 3 games and losing 7, which included big defeats to Portugal and Luxembourg. However, they have a real big chance now to put the poor group stage campaign behind them and try to put themselves into a good position to be in Germany come June.

You cannot come closer to qualifying, without qualifying, than Ukraine did. They headed into their final group stage game against Italy knowing a win would book their spot in Germany for Euro 2024 and Italy would be forced to qualify via these play-offs. After Mykhailo Mudryk appeared to be clipped in the box in the 93rd minute, Ukraine must have thought this was their moment, until after a lengthy VAR review, the officials decided it wasn’t a penalty and the game finished goalless, a decision which is still being questioned by people 4 months on. Despite both sides finishing on 14 points, Italy progressed through to Euro 2024, meaning Ukraine will have to do it via the play-offs if they want to join them.

I think we will see both teams on the scoresheet here, Bosnia and Herzegovina haven’t had a home game end in a draw in their last 12 games, away win… just.

Wales v Finland

The Cardiff City Stadium will be the venue for this clash between Wales and Finland, as both sides will be hoping to continue their Euro 2024 dream.

Wales came up short in Group D, Turkey finished the group first, Croatia second, Wales third, Armenia fourth and Latvia fifth. You did feel that Wales could get themselves out of the group with a ticket to Germany with two games to go, after their impressive 2-1 victory over Croatia, things looked good for the Welsh, but they followed that result up with two draws in their finals two games, meaning Rob Page’s side now have to do it the hard way.

They’ll be fairly confident though, having ended 2023 unbeaten in six across all competitions and winning three of their last five. The home side have also beaten Finland in two of their last three head-to-head games.

Finland are no pushovers, they’ve won six of their last ten games, although recent form will be a slight concern, they managed three back-to-back defeats before bouncing back against a struggling Northern Ireland side, they will feel a little disappointed that San Marino scored in their last game, Finland did win the game 2-1 but many expected a much ruthless scoreline.

I think the quality in this Wales side and the brilliant atmosphere in Cardiff will see the Welsh take the next step towards Euro 2024, home win.

Poland v Estonia

Poland welcome Estonia at the PGE Narodowy in Estonia as they look to book themselves into a Euro 2024 play-off final against either Wales or Finland.

You’d expect Poland to get the job done here without any issues really, Estonia finished their group stage campaign with just one point, which came in a 1-1 draw away to Azerbaijan. After their eight group games, they scored just two goals and conceded twenty-two, Poland will want to make a statement here and put in a dominant performance.

Estonia earned their play-off spot based on their performances in the 2022/2023 UEFA Nations League, they haven’t won in their last 11 games, whilst Poland have won five of their last nine, including a 1-0 victory over Germany.

Poland will want to continue their run of qualifying for major tournaments, the Eagles have qualified for every major tournament since the 2014 World Cup, with the likes of Kiwior, Zielinski and of course Robert Lewandowski, you wouldn’t be surprised if the keep that brilliant record going.

I expect a one-sided game here, Poland should be dominant in possession and will create lots of chances, expect home goals and a home victory.
