Football Predictions Tuesday

Spain U17 v Portugal U17

Spain U17’s have won this competition three times before and will get their European Championship campaign underway in Cyprus on Tuesday when they take on two time champions Portugal U17, with kick off at 4pm (BST).

This intriguing fixture will take place at the Dasaki Stadium in Sadaki Achnas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Cyprus. The stadium is a multi-purpose stadium with a capacity of 5,422 and is mostly used for football matches, including those of Ethnikos Achna FC, who play in the Cypriot first division.

Spain are expected to line up with Manu Gonzalez of Real Betis between the sticks, whilst centre-back’s Joan Martinez and Duegi Aguando, both of Real Madrid, could find themselves in from the start, although Barcelona’s Landry Farre has started the last two. The midfield is likely to consist of three Barcelona players, Juan Hernandez, Marc Bernal and Quim Junyent. In attack, Daniel Yanez (Real Madrid), Fifteen-year-old Guille Fernandez and Adrian Arnuncio, who comes into this tournament after making his debut for Real Valladolid recently, should all start.

Diogo Ferreira of Benfica is likely to start in net for Portugal, the back line could consist of Duarte Soares, Rui Silva, Rafael Mota and Martim Cunha. David Daiber (Bayern Munich), Joao Simoes (Sporting) and Rodrigo Mora (Porto) should all start in a midfield three, with Gabriel Silva (Sporting), fifteen-year-old Cardoso Varela (Porto) and Geovany Quenda (Porto), who has received high praise from Roberto Martinez, all set to start in attack.

Seven of the last ten meetings between these two sides have seen both sides hit the back of the net, granted these teams have obviously changed over the years but I think we could see the same happening here. Spain have lost just once in their last six outings (W3, D2, L1), the same can also be said about Portugal, albeit they’ve managed an extra victory. (W4, D1, L1).

The two nations met in a friendly just three months ago, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and given this is their first game of this tournament, neither side will want to start with a loss, I think we’ll see another draw here, 1-1.

It’s going to be a busy summer for sport and the European Under-17 Championship gets us underway on May 20th, with 16 teams travelling to Cyprus in a bid to lift the trophy.

An annual competition, defending champions Germany miss out on the opportunity to defend their title after failing to qualify for the finals.
