The World Cup record height list is headed by Andries Noppert at 2.03 metres, with a cluster of players just behind him at 2.02 metres and 2.01 metres.

The numbers are a reminder that height matters most at the back of the team sheet, where keepers and centre-backs tend to tower over everyone else.

Andries Noppert is also the tallest player to actually appear at a World Cup finals, making five appearances for the Netherlands at Qatar 2022 and keeping two clean sheets.

Florian Wiegele - a new squad record for 2026

Florian Wiegele stands at 2.05 metres, or 6ft 9in, and is the tallest player ever named in a World Cup squad.

Austria selected him for the 2026 tournament, and that alone places him above every other player in World Cup history.

Wiegele’s rise has been unusual enough to fit the big-man folklore football loves. He came through the lower leagues, moved on to Viktoria Plzeň, and earned his first Austria cap in 2026.

That combination of height, presence and late breakthrough has made him one of the more eye-catching squad inclusions of the tournament.

Andries Noppert - the tallest to play at a World Cup

Noppert’s 2.03-metre frame makes him the tallest player listed in the World Cup history ranking, and the tallest to actually take part in a finals match. He represented the Netherlands at Qatar 2022, where he started five matches.

The Dutch keeper’s place at the top is a neat split between squad history and pitch history. Wiegele owns the squad record.

Noppert owns the record for actual appearances. That distinction matters when the debate turns from who was selected to who got to stand between the sticks under World Cup pressure.

The tallest outfield players - Jan Koller and Peter Crouch

Jan Koller is the tallest outfield player on the World Cup list at 2.02 metres. The Czech forward used that frame as a genuine attacking weapon at Germany 2006, where he scored in his one appearance.

Peter Crouch is England’s most famous tall forward and sits just behind Koller at 2.01 metres. He played at Germany 2006 and South Africa 2010, scoring one goal across six appearances. Dan Burn is England’s tallest player in the 2026 squad at around 2.01 metres.

The outfield names on the list are a useful reminder that height is not only a goalkeeping trait. Centre-backs such as Dennis Lawrence, Per Mertesacker, Matthew Booth and Jannik Vestergaard also show how extra reach can be valuable in both boxes.

Why goalkeepers dominate the list

Goalkeepers dominate the tallest-player rankings because the position rewards reach, reach, and then a bit more reach. The higher starting frame helps with crosses, shot-stopping and commanding the area, which is why the top of the list keeps filling up with keepers rather than strikers.

Centre-backs also show up frequently because they deal with aerial duels every week. That is why the World Cup height list is such a familiar mix of goalkeepers and central defenders, with the odd towering forward like Koller or Crouch breaking the pattern.
