Shergar Cup Tips 2023

1.35 - Ascot

Blink and you’ll miss it, but today’s dash can go the way of the veteran racer JUDICIAL who is well overpriced at around 18/1 in the betting.

Back on his favoured turf, the eleven-year-old can reward the each-way punters out there after placing their horse racing online bets.

Danger: Existent

2.10 - Ascot

Staying is the name of the game in this race and a horse holding its form very well over these marathon trips is THE GRAND VISIR.

Running on a week ago in the Goodwood Handicap, the nine-year-old should be on the premises. In June he also figured in the Royal Ascot betting here.

Danger: The Very Man

2.45 - Ascot

Daniel & Claire Kubler’s ANDALEEP has been running with credit all season and the seven-year-old looks sure to be in the mix again in this 1m4f contest.

Arc winning jockey Luke Morris is in the plate too which guarantees him a solid ride.

Danger: Wootton’Sun

3.20 - Ascot

Frankie Dettori can make the headlines in his very last Shergar Cup by steering EMPIRESTATEOFMIND to victory.

Not beaten far here a fortnight ago, John Quinn’s runner is sure to give Frankie another great Ascot spin.

Danger: Fox Tal

3.55 - Ascot

On what could be a high scoring afternoon for the girls, Hayley Turner appears to have her best chance on RAJASTHAN for the Gosden’s here.

Winner of a Salisbury maiden at the end of June, the three-year-old will come on a bundle for the experience.

4.30 - Ascot

The Sprint is the final race of the afternoon and there is absolutely no getting away from the form horse QUINAULT.

Chasing down a seven-timer, the three-year-old simply looks too good against the assembled field and Luke Morris is sure to give him an inspired ride.

Danger: Washington Heights

The Shergar Cup is held at Ascot every August and is a popular team competition featuring riders from all around the world. This year it will take place on Saturday 12th August 2023.

British racing’s only event of its kind, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup attracts some of the best jockeys from across the globe to compete in four teams representing Great Britain and Ireland, Europe, Rest of the World and the Girls, each vying for valuable points in six competitive handicaps and the chance to lift the coveted Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Trophy.

It doesn’t quite measure up to the levels of Royal Ascot betting we witness here in June at this venue, but it does pretty well. The four competing teams feature three riders each and the teams are as follows.

2023 Shergar Cup Teams:

Great Britain & Ireland

  • Declan McDonogh, Tom Marquand, Luke Morris (capt)

Rest Of The World

  • Joao Moreira , Kazuo Yokoyama, Vincent Ho (capt)

Europe

  • Olivier Peslier, Bauyrzhan Murzabayev, Frankie Dettori (capt)

Girls

  • Hollie Doyle, Saffie Osborne, Hayley Turner (capt)

What Is The Shergar Cup Format?

Six races make up the meeting, all with ten runners in each. Every rider will compete in five of the six races on the afternoon.

Points are awarded for positions 1 to 5. i.e 1st (15) 2nd (10) 3rd (7) 4th (5) 5th (3).

After all six races the team that has amassed the most points overall wins the Shergar Cup and the “Silver Saddle” award is given to the jockey who scores the most points of all.

How Does The Shergar Cup Work?

The Shergar Cup is very much a marmite event with punters. However it can’t be all that bad an event as it has been running now since 1999 and there are plenty of betting opportunities to be had if you do your homework.

Given that the whole competition is based on team tactics and instructions, it may pay to stick with your fancied team all afternoon and include their mounts in a range of bets, including singles, placepots and forecasts.

For the record, the 888sport fancy for the cup this year is Team EUROPE, mainly because of the Frankie Dettori bowing out factor, plus he’s joined by two of France’s best jockeys.

You can find the price for Team EUROPE here in our horse racing odds ahead of the 2023 Shergar Cup weekend.
