Betting on NBA Games

Of all the major US sports, NBA is the highest scoring, with combined points totals sometimes surpassing 200.

Also, some teams tend to play exceptionally well in the first couple of quarters, while others play better as the game goes on.

This can make betting on the NBA a truly exhilarating experience.

Most Popular NBA Bets & Odds

There are several ways you can bet on an NBA game. Here are just some of the most popular:

  • Winners – bet on the outright winner of the Championship, the Eastern or Western Conferences, or an individual game.
  • Spread – NBA games can easily pass a hundred points, so you may have the chance to use a spread to help even the odds of the losing team winning a wager. This means handicapping the favourite by giving more points to the underdog, or taking points away from the team most likely to win.
  • Moneyline – this type of bet offers odds based on the predictions of who will win. Moneyline wagers can be significant when teams with near-perfect standings compete against lower level teams.
  • Total bet – a bet on the combined score of both teams. This predicted figure is determined by the sportsbook, and fans will need to place an over or under bet on the announced score.
  • Draft – bet on the player you think will be drafted first overall.
  • 1st half bet – an NBA game consists of four 12-minute quarters, and fans can place a bet on the 1st quarter line and the 1st half line of these games. These bets are essentially wagering on a game within a game.

NBA Betting - FAQs

How do NBA betting odds work?

As with traditional sporting bets you can find fractional odds, though the options and wording may be slightly different than you’d find for UK sports.

‘Championship Winner’ simply refers to which team will come out on top overall in the league, but you can also predict the Most Valuable Player in a given season too, for example.

Newcomers can check out NBA tips and articles at our blog to help them get started.

How do you predict the outcome of an NBA game?

As with any sport, it’s impossible to predict the outcome of an NBA game with certainty. However, there are a few advantages that could help your chances of winning a bet, including:

  • Home-court advantage – are the underdogs or the favourites playing at home, or is it on neutral ground?
  • Rests between games – how long ago was the team’s last game, and is there a chance they’re still recovering?
  • Recent win percentage – each team will have a win-loss ratio and a percentage of how likely they are to win a game.
  • Previous seasons – what happened when these two teams went up against each other last season? Was it a close call or did one team dominate the other?

Is it better to bet over or under in NBA?

Whether you bet over or under the sportsbook’s predicted total score depends entirely on you. Either way, you’ll only win the bet if you correctly guess the total score as being more or less than the sportsbook’s figure.

If the total score is exactly the same as the predicted one, you’ll have your bets refunded to you – as neither option wins.

What does RL mean in basketball betting?

RL stands for Run Line, and refers to the combination of odds and moneyline on an NBA game. This is determined by the spread and is usually displayed as a plus for the underdog and a minus for the favourite.

So, if you bet on the favourite with a +16 Run Line, they need to win the game by more than 16 points for you to win the bet.
