What Is The Ligue 1?

Founded back in 1932, France’s top flight is one of Europe’s oldest major domestic leagues. Every year, 20 teams compete for the Ligue 1 title, with the bottom three relegated to the second tier of French football – otherwise known as Ligue 2.

888sport can offer punters odds on Ligue 2 and other French competitions. The Coupe de France is one of the more popular tournaments with bettors and it is the French equivalent of the English FA Cup. In 2018/19, Rennes shocked the country by defeating hot favourites Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout in the Coupe de France final.

Ligue 1 History

19 clubs have been fortunate enough to lift the French domestic title; Saint-Etienne are the most successful team in Ligue 1 history with 10 victories. In recent years, PSG have closed the gap at the top though and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see a switch in the coming years. Paris Saint-Germain have won the Ligue 1 title six times in the last seven years.

Marseille are the second most successful team in this competition with nine titles, one more than Paris Saint-Germain. According to the latest betting odds ahead of the 2019/20 Ligue 1 season, Marseille are third favourites at 25/1 with PSG priced at 1/14 with 888sport.

French Ligue 1 Betting 2018/19 Results

As previously mentioned, Paris Saint-Germain were crowned Ligue 1 champions last season after a dominant campaign. Thomas Tuchel’s side finished 16 points clear of Lille in second spot, who were a further three points ahead of Olympique Lyonnais. Those three clubs will compete in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League competition.

Despite a courageous campaign, Saint-Etienne will have to settle for Europa League football this season after finishing fourth. With a bit of luck, the most successful club in Ligue 1 history could climb into the top three next season.

Dijon, Caen and Guingamp were relegated down to Ligue 2 at the end of 2018/19. All three teams failed to inspire confidence for the most part of the campaign and were well adrift of 17th placed Monaco.

Best Ligue 1 Bets:

It is difficult to look past Paris Saint-Germain in the Ligue 1 title race. There is no value at all in backing PSG at 1/14 but their dominance in recent years has been well-documented and it would take a brave man to look elsewhere. Lyon are a little short at 9/1 but are well worth considering in a ‘without Paris Saint-Germain’ betting market.

Kylian Mbappe has been linked with a summer switch to Real Madrid but he remains a Paris Saint-Germain player for the time being and could finish the 2019/20 as the Ligue 1 top goal scorer. Mbappe is widely regarded as the golden boy of world football and another positive campaign looks likely for the French youngster.
