Serie A was officially founded back in 1898 and is considered by many to be the oldest domestic division in Europe, having been formed 94 years before the English Premier League as we know it. This is a league with such heritage and history that it remains popular with punters all over Europe - and the race to be Serie A winners is always fierce.
In terms of league format, it works in a very similar way to the English Premier League. There are 20 leading Italian teams that all fight it out for the title - the Scudetto. Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, the three teams that finish bottom will drop down to the second league - as happens in the English Football League.
Since its inception, over 100 years ago, there have been over 67 different clubs competing in Italy's first-tier league. Since the format of the league changed to its current layout in 1929, the only team to have played every season has been Inter Milan, with Juventus and Roma falling one season short and AC Milan having missed 2 seasons.
In terms of success, The Old Lady - Juventus win Serie A regularly. They have won the league 36 times and have been runners-up 26 times. Although they are not the current title holders, they are still considered by many to have the strongest team to date. Inter Milan has won 19 times and AC Milan has won 18 times. There have been thirteen other teams to lift the trophy including Genoa, Fiorentina, Roma, Lazio and more.
Inter Milan was dominant last season and won the league 12 points clear of runners-up, AC Milan. Atalanta threw out a surprise result, coming in third - on equal points to Juventus but having a better goal difference. These four teams took the leading four spots and have each earned a place in next season's Champions League race.
Napoli fell just short - and was behind the third and fourth team by just one point, earning them fifth place. Lazio was in sixth, but they fell well short of the mark - nine points behind Napoli. However, these results will only be good enough to earn them a spot in the Europa League this year.
Stefano Pioli’s men were 1 point clear of Atalanta, who enjoyed a remarkable campaign to finish third. Back in fourth – on the same points as Atalanta – were Juventus. All four teams will compete in the Champions League in 2021/22.
At the other end of the spectrum, Parma, Crotone and Benevento took the bottom three places in the league - with Parma only managing three wins from 38 games. All three teams will be dropping down to Serie B. They will be replaced by the promoted Empoli, Salernitana and Venezia.

With the odds as they are and the history of the Old Lady, betting against Juventus is hard, but they proved themselves fallible last season. There could be every chance that they suffer the same fate this year. Internazionale was fearsome last season - and the odds on them at this time are incredibly generous - at 43/20 - so punters may well place their bets right there.
Ronaldo will always be in the running for lead goalscorer and he's hungry for titles and records, so will be coming in as the favourite. He won last year, with 29 goals. However, Lukaku would give him a run for his money and is worth a look.
