Going: Good to Firm

The Gold Cup at Royal Ascot 40 days ago produced a race for the ages as SCANDINAVIA went head to head with the 2025 winner Trawlerman and edged in front in the last five strides at the end of 2m4f. It's possible that that race will have brought Trawlerman back to his peak, as it was his reappearance, but he wasn't far off it anyway and Scandinavia is 6-6 in cheekpieces, with this race last year among those victories. It's not an easy call and a fantastic race is on its way if they return in the same form as at Ascot. The two of them have graphically demonstrated the value of headgear, which might heighten interest in Lazy Griff who was placed in two Derbys last season and arrives here relatively unexposed as a stayer, wearing cheekpieces for the first time. Rahiebb's failure in the Gold Cup leaves him unproven beyond an extended 1m6f. [Richard Austen]

Unbeaten with cheekpieces added for his last six starts, including this race last year (outbattled an in-form Illinois), the St Leger at Doncaster (by a neck from Rahiebb) that September and last month's 2m4f Gold Cup at Royal Ascot; had proven fitness on his side against the reappearing Trawlerman when inching ahead close home in their magnificent duel for the Gold Cup, but his stayers' crown is unlikely to be relinquished without a mighty effort whatever the circumstances.

Can make the running (he doesn't have to) to maximise the emphasis on stamina; won a handicap at this meeting in 2022 in his only appearance at Goodwood and has battled it out in the top staying contests since autumn 2023; unbeaten in four British races last season, but reappearance this term was delayed until his repeat bid for the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and he lost out to Scandinavia in only the dying strides; he didn't look far off his best that day but there's clearly an argument that he will have come on from the run.

Two wins here in May initiated his tremendous progress last season; flopped at odds-on when he was rather forced to make the running in Yorkshire Cup on 2026 reappearance, but he ran on nicely for a creditable sixth of 12 in a very strong Hardwicke at Royal Ascot (1m4f) next time; stays 1m6f and has each-way claims if he gets this new trip.

Second last term in the Derby and third in the Irish Derby; not seen afterwards as a 3yo but 2m races at Sandown this season have seen his promise renewed for serious stamina tests; it was just a four-runner Listed race last time when he dominated from the front at 4-7, so he needs much better today, but cheekpieces are enlisted and he's a fascinating newcomer to a top staying race.

Two clashes with Scandinavia last term (Royal Ascot and the St Leger) indicated there was little between them and he returned with an authoritative win in the Yorkshire Cup at York in May; all three of those races were over about 1m6f and, having turned for home in fourth when 8-1 in the 2m4f Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, he ended up beaten 24l in eighth; now tries his hand at 2m and maybe he'll get it, but others have proved their stamina.

7l second to Trawlerman in 2025 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and beaten three-quarters of a length by Scandinavia in this; those performances were near his best but most since have been pretty grim; this season's clear exception was when he made class tell with sights lowered in the 2m5f Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot, winning by a neck from French Master, but latest start showed again that today's task is likely to take him well out of his comfort zone.

Smart performer on his day, as when a 1m6f handicap winner at 2025 Royal Ascot and again on two of three starts this season; beaten a neck by Illinois in 2m5f Queen Alexandra back at Royal Ascot on latest; however, he managed only fifth in this race last year and this renewal also looks tough.

Suited by step up to 2m when Listed winner on final start last term and she's played creditable supporting roles in Group events this term; best form when 11l fifth at 80-1 behind Scandinavia and Trawlerman in the 2m4f Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last time; needs to find extra and headgear is given a go.
