BTTS Tips: What Does Both Teams To Score Mean?

Regulars on football betting pages will be familiar with BTTS markets. Both teams to score is one of the leading markets on any football odds page, alongside the result, goals over/under and half-time/full-time.

However, some people might be wondering ‘What does BTTS mean in betting?’

Bet Calculator

After all, there is a lot of jargon associated with sports betting online. A term like BTTS will not be heard in usual football discourse or conversation and is a very specific topic to the betting industry.

Let’s run through some key questions you need to know the answers to before you start looking for BTTS tips:

What Does BTTS Mean In Betting?

Punters are always on the lookout for markets where statistics can be easily researched and applied to a betting strategy and the BTTS bet fits the bill perfectly.

This type of wager is now so popular, many bookmakers offer coupons just for this market and they regularly include BTTS bets in weekly bonuses. The punter must simply predict if both teams in a selected match will score during 90 minutes plus injury time.

Own goals are included in this wager. It doesn’t matter how or when the goal is scored, so long as both teams have scored before the full-time whistle. Most bookies will not include extra time in this market.

Make sure you have a full understanding of the BTTS meaning before placing wagers in this market. Read all the terms and conditions.

How Does a BTTS Bet Work?

A BTTS bet is alive until the final whistle goes. Timing doesn’t matter in this market. All you need is both teams to find the net via whatever means and whatever the final scoreline. A straight-up BTTS bet could cash with the last kick of the game, even if one team was 7-0 down heading into injury time.

This makes it an exciting bet that keeps you in the game until the very end. Others, like half-time/full-time and first goal scorer, can be done for early in proceedings. Even betting a team to win can be all but wiped off before the match is over if they fall a couple of goals behind.

This bet staying alive until the end of the match is one of the main reasons this bet type has become so popular.

Why BTTS Betting?

For those who take a measured approach to their betting, the BTTS market offers the chance to research and analyse statistics.

With so much data available across all the major leagues, it is fairly easy to identify match-ups between teams with high payout percentages in this market.

Some teams have a higher BTTS percentage at home while others rank highly away from home. And some leagues have higher strike rates than others.

Sites like WinDrawWin allow bettors to dive into the statistics to get a good read on where the betting value lies. You can read football predictions for BTTS tips, or you can conduct your own research, and see which teams have been profitable to back in BTTS this season.

How To Bet on Both Teams To Score

Statistics are your friend when figuring out how to bet on both teams to score. You need to look at as much data as possible, including BTTS hit rate, expected goals for and against, and previous meetings between the two teams.

We would also recommend looking at past clashes between managers. For instance, some teams will have seen a lot of change in their personnel and playing style over the last couple of seasons, so how the managers have fared against one another could be a good way to predict the match.

https://www.888sport.com/blog/football-prediction

Exercise caution when looking at previous seasons. As an example, Chelsea have seen BTTS land in 62% of their league matches in 2023-24, but BTTS cashed in under half of their fixtures in 2022-23. Trends over multiple seasons are not always helpful when trying to predict future outcomes.

Once you have identified a match where BTTS seems like a good option, analyse the odds available.

Decide if there is value there. It’s also worth considering a BTTS accumulator if there are multiple matches that you expect both teams to score in, especially if the respective BTTS odds are on the short side.

A jump back in time to the 2013/14 Bundesliga allows us to see how trends in this area translate into a betting situation.

During that campaign, there were some strong teams in the BTTS category. Hoffenheim were the pick of the bunch with a home record of 82.4% and an away record of 76.5%.

Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart both had a home score of 76.5%, while Mainz and Wolfsburg both had away strike rates of 76.5%.

So let’s look at the results of the matches between these teams, pitching those strong at home with those strong away from home:

  • Hoffenheim 2-4 Mainz

  • Hoffenheim 6-2 Wolfsburg

  • Bayer Leverkusen 2-3 Hoffenheim

  • Bayer Leverkusen 0-1 Mainz

  • Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Wolfsburg

  • Stuttgart 6-2 Hoffenheim

  • Stuttgart 1-2 Mainz

  • Stuttgart 1-2 Wolfsburg

As we can see, when these teams were matched head-to-head according to their relative BTTS strengths, seven out of eight matches ended with both teams on the score sheet.

That’s a return of 87.5% across that group of games. That's an excellent return by any standards. Look out for trends similar to this when making your BTTS tips.

BTTS Betting Strategy

By seeking out matches between teams with a high percentage either home or away, the punter increases their chances of a win. Some bettors may set a combined threshold to make their decision easier.

For example, they might decide that a combined score of 140% represents a good betting opportunity.

So, if the home side has a BTTS strike rate of 75%, the away team would need to have a percentage score of 65 or more to bring the bet into consideration.

The higher a punter sets the threshold, the better chance they will have of winning. However, there will be fewer betting opportunities. Once matches have been chosen, punters may then decide to back them all or just the ones that offer the best value.

BTTS Tips For Specific Leagues

You don’t need to know everything about the league or teams involved to place a BTTS bet. Statistics are the key. Anyone who knows how to research and analyse betting trends can craft a BTTS tips strategy.

So long as you know the BTTS meaning and have a willingness to look through the numbers, you can be a successful BTTS punter.

Even if you usually just survey Premier League odds, you can look elsewhere in the search for betting value.

Perhaps BTTS trends show Serie A has been a good place to make a profit because Napoli – as an example – have seen both teams score in eight of their last 10 matches. If they’re then at evens to see BTTS land, you can jump to Serie A BTTS betting without any issues.

Punters can establish such information without being experts in that particular league. BTTS bets require less precise predictions than some other bets such as correct score or first goal scorer.

And punters who enjoy building accumulators can still do so with Both Teams to Score bets.

With so much free information and statistics available, there is no need to bet on gut feelings or instinct alone.

By taking a more mathematical and methodical approach, punters can increase their chances of making a profit in the fun and exciting Both Teams to Score market.

Greatest Nigerian Players In Premier League History

Nigeria are one of the most successful African countries in terms of producing talent, with over 50 Nigerian players starring for Premier League clubs.

Just two nations have reached the Africa Cup of Nations final on more occasions than three-time winners Nigeria and football is more than a sport – it’s a religion.

https://www.888sport.com/blog/football-prediction

Efan Ekoku was the first Nigerian to feature in Premier League betting odds, featuring for Norwich City in April 1993 and several world class talents have hailed from the country.

Here, we look back at the greatest Nigerian footballers to grace the Premier League and we’ve also got a few statistics relating to some of the most influential Nigeria icons in England’s top flight.

Jay-Jay Okocha

Nigeria’s most skilful footballer of all-time, Jay-Jay Okocha was a fan favourite at Bolton Wanderers and supporters quickly labelled him “so good they named him twice”.

He made 145 appearances for Bolton, scoring 18 goals and helping to bring an attractive brand of football to the club. In addition, he played a total of 19 games for Hull City but he’ll forever be remembered for his time at the Reebok Stadium.

He recorded 75 appearances for the Nigeria national side and scored 15 goals – and he was a key figure for his country in their Olympic gold medal success at Atlanta 1996.

Yakubu

While some would describe him as a ‘journeyman’, he was an excellent footballer and teams often built around him – with fans obtaining fond memories of the Nigerian centre forward at Portsmouth, Blackburn, Everton and Middlesbrough.

The Premier League’s highest scoring Nigerian player with 95 goals, Yakubu had power, pace and precision – three traits needed to succeed in English football. And boy, did he do that!

Nwankwo Kanu

Kanu is a true legend of the game, not just in Nigeria or the Premier League but around the world. He was a pivotal figure for Arsenal during one of the club’s most successful eras and he was also hugely influential at West Bromwich Albion and Portsmouth.

Bet Calculator

He has two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and an Olympic gold medal on his CV while he was also crowned Nigeria Player of the Year the same year that the country was successful at Atlanta 1996.

Even younger football supporters watching today’s game will have heard about Kanu’s greatness and he is undoubtedly one of the biggest Nigerian talents to play the game.

John Obi Mikel

Criminally underrated, Jon Obi Mikel was at Chelsea for over a decade and he made a total of 372 appearances for the club.

He won two Premier League titles, a Champions League title, a Europa League title, four FA Cups and two League Cups – making him one of the most decorated Nigerian footballers of all-time.

Mikel was solid, Mikel was reliable and Mikel was consistent. He missed just 17 games through injury during his 11-year career at Stamford Bridge and he is well worth a place on this list of best Nigerian players to play in the Premier League.

Joseph Yobo

A fan favourite at Goodison Park, Yobo will be forever regarded as one of the greatest Nigerian defenders to star in England’s top flight. While he doesn’t have the goal-scoring record of Kanu or Yakubu, he was a hugely important player for the Toffees.

In the 2006/07 season, he was one of just seven players in the Premier League to play every minute of every game. In total, he recorded 220 appearances for Everton and he scored a total of eight goals for the club.

Nigerian Player With Most Premier League Appearances

While several players have recorded 200 or more Premier League outings, Shola Ameobi holds the Premier League record for most appearances by a Nigerian footballer and he ended his career with a total of 297 matches.

Kanu wasn’t far behind with 273 appearances while fellow Nigeria legend Yakubu racked up 252 appearances. Ameobi wasn’t a clinical goal scorer not did he record assist after assist but he was a crucial squad member and he was a cult hero in Newcastle.

Which Nigerian Has Scored Most Premier League Goals?

A total of three Nigerians have topped the half century mark, with Efan Ekoku notching 53 goals during his time in the top flight while Kanu bagged 54 goals across an 11-year tenure in the Premier League.

However, none come close to Yakubu – who was just five goals off the Premier League 100 Club by the time he played his final top flight game. Yakubu remains clear of his compatriots with a total of 95 Premier League goals, averaging around a goal every three games.

Nigerian Footballer With Most Premier League Assists

As of February 2025, Kanu holds the record for the most Premier League assists by a Nigerian player with 29 – just three more than former Everton star Yakubu.

This should come as no surprise given Kanu is second on the all-time Premier League appearances list when it comes to Nigerian players.

Championship Referees: Salary, Statistics & Rankings

IT might be stating the obvious but you can’t have a game of football without an appointed referee!

Match officials deserve our respect. It is a difficult job – especially in the modern era with so much media scrutiny, decisions impacting Championship relegation tips and title odds every weekend.

Focusing on our EFL Championship, I want to analyse the current crop of referees.

https://www.888sport.com/blog/football-prediction

After all, there is massive interest in the second tier of English football prompting betting and bet builder activity each weekend.

So here is a look at relevant Championship statistics for match officials. They are part of what is known as Select Group 2.

In addition to these stats, I spoke to former top referees Keith Hackett and Mark Halsey to obtain their verdicts on the leading Championship performers out in the middle…

Championship Referee Statistics

*Figures correct as of 17th February 2025*

Salaries: The basic wage for EFL Championship referees is in the region of £50,000 per year. They also receive match fees of approximately £500 per game.

Appearances: Four referees lead the way with 20 matches officiated each this season in the EFL Championship: John Busby, Oliver Langford, Josh Smith and David Webb.

Most red cards: For 2024/25, the greatest number of red cards issued is six by Gavin Ward in his 18 games.

Most yellow cards: Josh Smith has brandished 83 yellow cards across 20 matches.

Championship Referees Ranked by Keith Hackett

In recent months I have been impressed with four Select Group 2 referees that are knocking on the door of the Premier League.

The important aspect of their ongoing careers is to have good coaches in place and the appropriate leadership and direction.

Josh Smith

Smith was promoted to the EFL Referees list in 2018 and quickly received successive promotions to SG2. He is fit and mobile and reads the game really well.

He also possesses good communication and management skills. He should be given a run of games in the Premier League.

James Linnington

One of the more experienced officials in the English Football League.

First became an EFL referee in 2008 and has since refereed more than 4,000 matches in the League. He should be given the opportunity of Premier League appointments.

Andrew Kitchen

I have watched several of his recent matches and he delivers consistent performances.

He began officiating in the EFL at the start of the 2021/22 season and has so far taken charge of more than 50 fixtures.

Steve Martin

My fourth choice would be Steve Martin who is the son of a former top assistant referee.

Championship Referees Ranked by Mark Halsey

I’ve been going through the list of referees and watching them in action during fixtures involving the team I support – Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.

There is a pool of good match officials.

However, the leadership and direction of training, educating and coaching these referees is so important. As a referee, it is all about engaging with the players and understanding the game by reading the play and anticipating.

It just seems that they are currently showing a yellow card for every foul and there is no need for that. It’s not always about the laws of the game. It is about knowing the game of football. But a number of guys have impressed me...

Geoff Eltringham

He has been around quite a long time. Geoff was on the list when I was refereeing on the Football League. I’ve always known him to be a common sense referee.

Bobby Madley

Another experienced official who understands the game. He doesn’t go reaching for his yellow card willy-nilly.

Steve Martin

He looks like a heavyweight boxer at times with his physique! But he’s another referee who uses a little bit of common sense.

Josh Smith

A young referee coming through. I think he’s got a great talent and he’s had a few games in the Premier League this season. Josh has bags of potential and ability.

I should also mention David Webb and Dean Whitestone. For me, these are the match officials who have got a little bit about them. They know the game and they referee the game itself and not for themselves.

It is all about the players – understanding the players, managing the players and managing the event. Overall, we want the best people refereeing the games at the highest level.
