Football Predictions Tuesday

Paris Saint-Germain v Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund will head to Paris to face Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes with a slight advantage, as the two sides look to secure their place in the Champions League final at Wembley.

Paris Saint-Germain have made it a little more difficult for themselves, they disappointed in the first leg over in Germany, especially in the first half where they didn’t manage to get one shot on target, whilst Dortmund found the only goal of the game to put that extra pressure on the Parisians.

However, Luis Enrique’s side had a much better second half and might feel they were unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi both hitting the post in a matter of seconds. "We saw an even match with two teams that play good football when they have the ball," Luis Enrique told a press conference on Wednesday. "We both created many scoring chances. This time our opponents scored and we didn't. The result reflects how close the game was”. The good news for PSG is they’ve played Dortmund at home earlier in this campaign and won the game 2-0, they’ll be hoping for a similar result on Tuesday night.

Borussia Dortmund are 90 minutes away from their first Champions League final for eleven years and are on the verge of returning back to Wembley, where they’ll be hoping to pick up their second ever tournament victory, with the first coming back in 1997.

Jadon Sancho’s performance seemed to be a big talking point after the game at Signal Iduna Park but the whole squad impressed me, Edin Terzic’s side showed their tactical discipline and managed to do something that now many sides can do, keep a clean sheet against Kylian Mbappe and co.

Despite their slight advantage, this is far from over as the Prussians have won just one of their last eleven away games in the knockout stages, drawing one and losing nine, which will be a worry for the Dortmund faithful. Experience defender Mats Hummels know it’s still a tough ask; "Of course we want to go to Wembley, but Tuesday in Paris will be another tough one," he said. "If you want to make it to the final, you have to be able to hold your own in Paris." His back four are going to be under a lot of pressure against PSG’s formidable attack.

I think PSG will get the job done here, Dortmund’s away record in this competition in the latter stages is a worry, with the home advantage and only one goal in it, I think the Parisians will fancy themselves to book their place in the final.

Football Predictions Wednesday

Club Brugge v Fiorentina

Jan Breydel Stadion is the venue for this Europa Conference League second leg between Club Brugge and Fiorentina.

Despite being down to 10 men after 61 minutes, Club Brugge were on their way to securing a draw on the road but a last minute goal from M’Bala Nzola has now given the Belgian side a job to do on Wednesday night. The good news for Club Brugge is that they’ve won eight of their last nine games at home in all competitions, this tie isn’t over just yet.

Fiorentina ended the first leg with a total of thirty-one goal attempts, some might say that last minute winner from Nzola was fully deserved for Viola. They’ll now head to Brugge with something to defend, both teams are in brilliant form right now and we were treated on Thursday evening with a thriller, I tipped the 3-2 scoreline at 25/1 in my blog last week, another game like that would be great for the neutral.

I think we’ll be treated again here to another cracker, the last three games that Fiorentina have been involved in have produced at least five goals, (3-2, 5-1, 4-1), whilst Club Brugge have scored at least three goals in five of their last six home games, so I fully expect both teams to score and this time we’ll lean towards Club Brugge with their home advantage.

Real Madrid v FC Bayern Munich

Two giants of European football come head-to-head in Madrid on Wednesday night, as Real Madrid welcome Bayern Munich to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg.

Another entertaining game between these two sides in the first leg has left it all to play for in Madrid on Wednesday evening, a Vinicius Junior brace spared Los Blancos their first defeat in this competition. Despite not leaving Germany with an advantage, Real Madrid won’t be too concerned given they have won all but one of their previous 24 games in a UEFA competition in which they have drawn the first leg away from home, remarkable.

The excitement is growing around this fixture, with both sides just 90 minutes away from securing a place in the final at Wembley, Brazilian Rodrygo feels his side have the momentum; "Now we head to the Bernabéu with the tie open and everything to play for, but we are at our place now. All of us wish the game could kick off right now – we can't wait."

It’s been a tough old season for Bayern Munich under Thomas Tuchel, from being knocked out of the German Cup by minnows Saarbrucken to seeing Bayer Leverkusen dominating the Bundesliga and claiming the title. I’m sure all that might be forgiven by the Bayern Munich faithful if their side can claim their seventh Champions League trophy and their first since 2020, they are just one game away from making that a real possibility.

Thomas Tuchel might feel a little disappointed that his side couldn’t take ad advantage over to Madrid, they were just seven minutes away from doing so before conceding a late penalty. Englishman Harry Kane knows how important this game is; "Everything we're fighting for is in this competition. We've just got to find a way to get it done. Real Madrid away is going to be tough but we've got to go there with full belief and go for the win.". They are going to need that full belief as Bayern Munich haven’t beaten Madrid away from home in their last seven games.

After the first leg, it’s now six games on the bounce between the two that we’ve seen both teams get on the scoresheet, I think we’ll see the same here but I fancy Real Madrid to book their place in the final.

Football Predictions Thursday

Atalanta v Marseille

Marseille will travel to Bergamo on Thursday evening to face Atalanta in the Europa League semi-final second leg at the Gewiss Stadium.

It’s still all to play for here in Bergamo after the stalemate in Marseille last week, it was a fairly even game as expected, both teams found the back of the net after just twenty minutes but neither side could find a winner and that advantage heading into this second leg. Dublin awaits for the winner here and Atalanta will feel confident given they’ve won eleven of their last fourteen home games across all competitions.

Marseille might be a little worried about this trip, their away form hasn’t been great of late and they’ve won just once in their last ten away games, they’ve also haven’t won in any of their last four away games in this competition, you feel they needed to come into this game with a lead to defend. Marseille coach Jean-Louis Gasset insists his side will give everything, "We had two or three chances to win the [first leg] 2-1. Then we would have been satisfied. But it is only half-time in the tie and we are going to go and give everything in Italy. We saw [in the first leg] that we could be a danger to them."

I think Atalanta will get the victory here over 90 minutes, their home form is great and Marseille’s troubles on the road, including games in this competition, will give the home side plenty of confidence. Marseille do have a goal in them, they’ve scored in seven of their last ten away games and five in their last six in this competition.

Bayer Leverkusen v AS Roma

AS Roma look to overcome a 2-0 deficit as they travel to Germany on Thursday evening to face Bayer Leverkusen.

There just doesn’t seem to be any stopping Xabi Alonso’s side this season, they extended their unbeaten run to an unbelieve forty-seven games and kept their treble hopes alive in the process. Avoid defeat here and Bayer Leverkusen will also extend their run to thirteen games without a loss in the Europa League. Xabi Alonso knows just how well his side have done this season; "2-0 is a good result; we go home happy but cautious. What we are doing in this season is outstanding. We have quality players with a very high level of focus. The most difficult thing is to be consistent. We don't want to stop – we want to go on like this until the end of the season."

The Stadio Olimpico is usually a happy place for AS Roma in UEFA competitions, they had lost just once in thirty-two UEFA competition matches before Bayer Leverkusen arrived. Daniele De Rossi’s side will need to do what seems like the impossible at the Bay Arena if they are to make it a third consecutive European final.

Roma will obviously have to go all out here if they are to book their place in the Europa League final in Dublin, which should leave plenty of space for Bayer Leverkusen to exploit, I expect this unbelievable run from the German side to continue, home win.

Olympiacos v Aston Villa

Aston Villa will travel to Greece on Thursday night to face Olympiacos in the Europa Conference League semi-final second leg.

Olympiacos are just 90 minutes away from securing their place in the Europa Conference League final, they would be just the second Greek side to reach a major UEFA competition final and the first since Panathinaikos in 1971. They were very impressive in their 4-2 victory over Aston Villa last week, they’ve also won eight of their last ten home games, although they did lose 4-1 here in this competition against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

Aston Villa felt it just wasn’t their night at Villa Park on Thursday, captain John McGinn is still backing his side to turn it around though, “Everything that could have gone wrong, did”.. "It's up to us to go to Athens and turn it around, because I know we're capable.", they might have felt a little confident of getting a result had Douglas Luiz scored his penalty late on, but they’ve got a bit of a mountain to climb here and they’ll have to do it with a hostile crowd in Greece.

Aston Villa are the betting favourites to take victory over 90 minutes here, I’ve got to agree with the market as well, I feel the Premier League side have better quality within their squad and they should have enough to get a victory, but will it be enough to see them secure a place in the final?

Football Predictions Friday

Brest v Stade de Reims

Stade Francis-Le Ble is the venue on Friday evening for this fixture between Brest and Reims in Ligue 1.

Brest are still on their way to finishing in the top four in Ligue 1 and qualifying for the Champions League next season but a slight hiccup against Nantes on Saturday evening means they could have invited a little pressure on themselves by the time they kick off here. However, with just two games left to play, realistically its almost a certainty, the only worry should be if they can hold on to third place which guarantees the UCL group stage.

Stade de Reims employed the youngest manager in Europe’s top five leagues last season when they appointed 30-year-old Will Still but that all came to an end on Thursday with the two parting ways. Reims are currently twelfth in Ligue 1, they’ve lost their last three games including a 4-1 defeat to bottom of the league Clermont Foot, the best they can now hope for is a top half finish, they’ll be looking to end the season as strongly as possible.

Reims are an entertaining side on the road, they hold the record in Ligue 1 for the most away games to produce both teams to score, with thirteen of their sixteen games seeing both teams hit the back of the net, a massive 81%. I expect to see the same thing here given four of the last five meetings between the two have produced the same. 1-1.

Nice v Le Havre

Relegation threatened Le Havre travel to the Allianz Riviera to face Nice on Friday evening in Ligue 1.

With just three games left to play, Nice still have dreams of finishing in the top four in Ligue 1 and securing Champions League football for next season, although it’s looking more likely to be Europa League place for Francesco Farioli’s side. The Eaglets are unbeaten in their last four games as they look to end the season strongly.

Le Havre are fighting to stay in the French top-flight for next season, after their impressive 3-1 victory in their last outing against Strasbourg, the Dean Club have given themselves a three-point gap to the relegation zone with just two games to play, even a draw here could see Le Havre secure their top flight status, depending on results elsewhere.

Just one win on the road for Le Havre although they hold the record for the most away draws in Ligue 1, with nine of their sixteen games ending in a stalemate.  These two sides met for the first time in fourteen years back in December and Le Havre came out victorious (3-1). Nice have actually only beaten Le Havre once in their last seventeen games, I think we’ll see Le Havre defy the odds here and get at least a draw.

Football Predictions Saturday

Celtic v Rangers

This one is huge in terms of the Scottish Premiership title, as Celtic and Rangers meet in a what is likely to be a feisty affair in Glasgow.

Celtic looked to have missed their chance of claiming their 54th Scottish title but after putting an unbeaten run together in their last six league games, including a 3-3 draw away to Rangers in April, the Bhoys find themselves top of the league by three points with just three games left to play. Brendan Rodgers side already have to advantage on goal difference but as long as they don’t get beat here, you’d expect them to go on and take the league title again.

Following their draw with Celtic back in April, the two games that came after that looked to have cost Rangers the title, it most certainly gave Celtic the advantage after a 3-2 loss away to Ross County and then a 0-0 draw at Dundee just three games later. Since then, the Gers have put together three consecutive wins, two of which are come in the league, a win here is a must for Rangers if they want to keep their title hopes alive, three points behind their bitter rivals with a smaller goal difference.

This will be a really good watch, Celtic will fancy their chances at Celtic Park given they’ve won the last three head to heads here whilst Rangers haven’t taken all three points on the road in this fixture since 2020, a game played behind closed doors.

Fulham v Manchester City

Manchester City will make the trip to West London on Saturday in the Premier League’s early kick off, as they take on Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Just one win in their last five Premier League games, Fulham look like they’re already on the beach, the best Marco Silva’s side can hope for now is a top half finish but they are four points behind Bournemouth in tenth with just two games left to play, it’s a big ask. It’s rare you’ll see a game end in a draw at Craven Cottage, they’ve drawn just twice in their eighteen league games there this season, I’m sure they would be happy with a draw here.

Manchester City are closing in on their fourth consecutive Premier League title which would be a new league record, just one point behind Arsenal heading into this game albeit with a game in hand. These last three games for Manchester City come with so much pressure and you feel other sides wouldn’t be able to handle it too well, this side definitely can and a victory here would put Pep Guardiola’s side at the summit of the Premier League, with their title contenders playing the other half of Manchester on Sunday afternoon.

This should be fairly straight forward for Manchester City, they’ve beaten Fulham in their last fifteen head-to-head matches, with the reverse fixture finishing 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium in September. Meanwhile, eight of the last ten between these two in West London have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Freiburg v Heidenheim

The Europa-Park Stadion will host this Bundesliga fixture on Saturday afternoon between Freiburg and Heidenheim.

This is a big game for both these sides, Freiburg need a win to keep their dreams alive of playing European football again next season, this time it’s looking likely to be the Europa Conference League. With just two games left to play in the league, they currently occupy that last qualifying spot (7th) with 41 points, just one point ahead of Hoffenheim.

Heidenheim have had a brilliant season so far and they could make it really special by finishing in the top seven and securing European football, they are just three points behind their opponents here with a better goal difference, meaning a result here could move them into the top seven if other results go their way. It’s a very slim chance given five other teams are still able to challenge Freiburg, but you just never know in football.

These two sides have met just once in the Bundesliga and that was earlier in the season, Heidenheim took all three points in that game with a 3-2 victory on home soil. However, they’ve won just three of their sixteen games away from home in the Bundesliga, they may have their work cut out here.

Newcastle United v Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion will take the long trip up north for Saturday afternoon’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are still hoping to end this season with some sort of European football, realistically it looks to be the one they’ve been fighting for most recently which is the Europa Conference League, it looks to be a shootout between themselves, Chelsea and Manchester United. However, Tottenheam have now lost four games on the bounce, with three games left to play, the Toon Army are now just four points behind Spurs and the Europa League spot, if they want to keep that slim chance alive, they’ve got to win here.

Brighton looked to had headed to the beach early looking at their recent results, the Seagulls were without a win in their last six Premier League games before Aston Villa headed to the south coast on Sunday afternoon, an unexpected 1-0 victory for Roberto De Zerbi’s side once again highlights the inconsistency this season, a victory here could see them move into the top half of the table.

Newcastle look to be back on top form, they’ve lost just once in their seven Premier League games and are unbeaten on home soil since January (7 games). I think Eddie Howe’s side will get the victory here as Brighton have won just once in their last games on the road, which came at relegated Sheffield United.

Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Burnley to North London on Saturday afternoon in this Premier League clash.

Tottenham haven’t had a good end to the season, after their thumping of fellow top four challengers Aston Villa at the time, it all looked set up for Spurs to go and claim that final Champions League spot in the Premier League but it’s not gone to plan. They’ve now lost their last four games in the league, granted all four games came against tough opponents but the biggest worry is the goals that Ange Postecoglou’s side are conceding in this set up, their defence has now been breached thirteen times in those four games, they’ll be looking to bounce back here.

This is literally a must win for Burnley if they are to put together a great escape and survive in the Premier League, after putting together a fairly decent run which gave the Clarets some hope of pulling off what looked like the impossible at one stage, a 4-1 hammering at home to Newcastle on Saturday has put a major dent in their survival hopes and they now need to win both of their remaining games and hope results go there way, anything other than three points here would see Vincent Kompany’s side return to the Championship.

Tottenham have beaten Burnley in ten of their eleven meetings as the home side, Burnley are yet to win on the road against Spurs, I think they’ll struggle again here and the home side should bounce back and seal the Clarets fate.
