The Champion Bumper is a unique event at the Cheltenham Festival in that it is the only flat race at the meeting.

Often viewed as an early stepping stone for the following year’s Supreme Novice Hurdle, the Champion Bumper is one of the most eagerly anticipated races of the week.

The inaugural renewal took place in 1992 and the Champion Bumper is now an ever-present on the Cheltenham Festival card. Here, we discuss the most key Champion Bumper trends in a bid to pick out a winner at the 2020 meeting.

Champion Bumper Trends & Statistics

Trends are essential when placing bets on the Cheltenham Festival – here are some of the biggest and most important statistics to consider for the Champion Bumper:

  • 20 out of 20 winners were no bigger than 50/1 in the horse racing betting.
  • All 20 did NOT have their final prep run at: Ascot, Doncaster, Gowran Park, Sandown or Warwick.
  • 19/20 winners were priced at 8/1 or shorter last time out.
  • 19 of the 20 winners had previously won over two miles or further.
  • 18/20 winners ran off at least 11-4 last time out.
  • 18/20 won their final race before Cheltenham.
  • 18/20 winners ran over two miles or further last time out.
  • 17 of the 20 winners ran over two miles on debut.

Top Trainers For The Champion Bumper

Willie Mullins has dominated this race, with nine victories to his name.

Relegate emerged victorious in 2018 but that is his only win in the last six Champion Bumper renewals – could Appreciate It take Mullins to 10 Cheltenham Festival flat race successes?

However, rival trainer Gordon Elliott will also fancy his chances having won this race in two of the last three years.

Envoi Allen, one of the favourites for the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle this year, romped home in 2019 and Elliott will once again have a strong hand in the race.

Champion Bumper 2020: Prize Money

With £75,000 up for grabs in 2019, the Champion Bumper is well worth targeting if you have a strong travelling type.

At the time of writing, the Willie Mullins-trained Appreciate It heads the Champion Bumper betting and he is expected to go close at the Cheltenham Festival.

Trial Races To Follow Ahead Of The Champion Bumper

Unsurprisingly, there is no real standout trial race for the Champion Bumper. However, three of the previous 20 winners had won a bumper at Cheltenham – a significant plus for any horse with course form.

Israel Champ emerged victorious in a lucrative bumper over course and distance back at Cheltenham’s November meeting.

Meanwhile, seven of the previous 20 Champion Bumper winners ran at Leopardstown or Naas last time out – so keep an eye out for Irish runners with form at these courses.

Appreciate It, trained by horse racing legend Willie Mullins, has claimed two victories at Leopardstown, most recently in a Grade Two at the Dublin Racing Festival.
