Steve Mullington gives his best horse racing tips for Wednesday, with a NAP, Next Best and a Longshot at Chester...

3.40 Chester – Grosvenor Square (NAP)

Grosvenor Square can put himself firmly into Aidan O’Brien’s Derby squad by landing Wednesday’s Chester Vase Stakes.

Winner of the Group Three Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown at the end of last season, Grosvenor Square should hopefully have trained on and I do not envisage any City Of Troy-esque moments on the Roodee.

O’Brien has won seven of the last 10 runnings of this Listed event, with Ruler Of The World winning in 2013 before going on to land the Derby the following month. This son of Galileo could well do the same in 2024.

Danger: Cadogan Place

3.05 Chester – Galileo Dame (NB)

The way Galileo Dame quickened up to win the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden at Leopardstown, you would like to think that she could take the Listed Cheshire Oaks in her stride too.

The last three winners of the aforementioned contest have all gone on to be Group One performers in Tarnawa, Above The Curve and last season subsequent Irish Oaks winner Savethelastdance was successful in it.

This bodes well for Joseph O’Brien’s filly and at odds of around 9/4 in our horse racing betting, she looks the most logical wager in the race.

Danger: Port Fairy

1.30 Chester- Beyond Borders (E/W Longshot)

The Karl Burke stable has been in red hot form of late and they are represented in this 6f handicap by the three-year-old Beyond Borders.

I saw Beyond Borders run at Pontefract 36 days ago, and although he was never going to catch James’s Delight, he ran on strongly to the line in what were testing conditions. He should be a better horse on Good going today.

Four victories from nine career starts aren’t to be sniffed at and odds of 10/1 aren’t either.

Danger: Garfield Shadow

Steve Mullington gives his best horse racing tips for Thursday, with a NAP, Next Best and a Longshot at Chester...

3.05 Chester – God’s Window (NAP)

The Listed Dee Stakes at Chester always throws up some good horses to follow for the future and I believe one of those could well be God’s Window.

The Dubawi-colt won his maiden well then was stepped up straight into Group One company at Doncaster. He was a bit slow away, which is not uncommon on a second run, but he rallied well to take third place.

The Gosden’s said he had done great through the off season and that proved to be correct when he hosed up by over eight lengths in a Nottingham novice stakes.

He never made it to the Feilden Stakes so you would like to think he will be spot on for this Chester feature.

Danger: Capulet

3.40 Chester – Deauville Legend (NB)

Today’s Group Three Ormonde Stakes has a strange feel about it as it is littered with what some people would unkindly refer to “has-beens”.

One such horse trying to rekindle former glories is the James Ferguson-trained Deauville Legend.

Winner of the Bahrain Trophy and the Great Voltigeur in 2022, the five-year-old ended that season with an excellent fourth in the Melbourne Cup, finishing five lengths behind Gold Trip. He never really sparkled last year, running just three times and never quite making the frame.

If a 257-day break has done the trick then he could well run a big race on Thursday afternoon.

Danger: Point Lonsdale

1.30 Chester- Copper Knight (E/W Longshot)

Tim Easterby’s Copper Knight needs no introduction on the sprint handicap circuit and the previous course and distance winner can take home the silverware in this five furlong dash.

Copper Knight’s exploits are well documented at York but he also enjoys his little jaunts over to Chester and usually runs a solid race around the Roodee.

He can go well from a decent draw and is an interesting each-way contender in out horse racing betting.

Danger: Vintage Clarets

Steve Mullington gives his best horse racing tips for Friday, with a NAP, Next Best and a Longshot at Chester...

3.05 Chester – Passenger (NAP)

The Group 2 Huxley Stakes looks like the ideal race for Passenger to shine in on Friday afternoon.

Sir Michael Stoute’s four-year-old achieved his 111 rating by landing the Winter Hill Stakes on his last outing after an unsuccessful attempt at winning the Derby last June.

A close third in last year’s Dante Stakes at York, this race is exactly where the Ulysses-colt is at for my money and I think he will put up a bold show under Richard Kingscote.

Danger: Royal Rhyme

2.05 Chester – Ephesus (NB)

This race is quite unique in that it is a "Confined" Maiden Stakes (For Horses Which Have Not Run More Than Twice) and presents a wonderful opportunity for the Irish maestro Aidan O’Brien to land the spoils with his once raced Ephesus.

Third at Dundalk on the 13th April, this son of Galileo can make his superior breeding count by taking this 1m4½f contest under William Buick.

Currently trading at odds of 6/5 in our horse racing betting, I can see this horse going off a shade of odds-on come race time.

3.40 Chester – The Grand Visir (E/W Longshot)

He may be a ten-year-old but there is no way The Grand Visir should be the outsider of the entire field here and odds of 50/1 look massive.

A former winner of the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting, this veteran performer was also the runner-up in this feature race in 2021.

He is no stranger to long distance affairs and was once thought good enough to run at Longchamp where he finished an honourable third to Skazino in the Group 2 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier.

A five-time career winner from 34 Flat starts, I can envisage a big run at decent odds for this forgotten son of Frankel.

Danger: The Shunter
